We’ve taken a closer look at the history of Les Bleus and ranked the 15 greatest French footballers of all time — based on their international success, club achievements, individual honors, and lasting legacy.

15. Jean-Pierre Papin

Winner of the 1991 Ballon d’Or, Jean-Pierre Papin was a lethal striker best known for his powerful volleys — nicknamed “Papinades.” He scored 30 goals in 54 appearances for France and was adored by Marseille fans during the club’s golden years.

14. Karim Benzema

One of the most technically gifted strikers of his generation, Benzema won the 2022 Ballon d’Or after leading Real Madrid to Champions League glory. Despite a complicated international career, he still scored 37 goals for France across 97 caps.

France’s all-time leader in appearances (142 caps), Thuram was a cornerstone of the defense in their 1998 and 2000 victories. His versatility and intelligence made him one of the greatest defenders of his era.

Kopa won the 1958 Ballon d’Or and shone for both Reims and Real Madrid. Known for his dribbling and playmaking, he was a star in an era when France was still making its mark on the world stage.
