Chelsea’s turbulent managerial search continues following the swift dismissal of Liam Rosenior, with former Blues midfielder Cesc Fabregas among the high-profile names being linked to the vacant Stamford Bridge hot seat. However, Fabregas, currently thriving as head coach of Serie A side Como, is keen to emphasize his present commitments while acknowledging a future desire to return to the Premier League.

Chelsea’s turbulent managerial search

Rosenior’s tenure at Chelsea lasted a mere three months, culminating in his sacking after the club endured a dismal run of five consecutive Premier League defeats without scoring a single goal. This marked the first time Chelsea had experienced such a scoring drought in the league since 1912. Despite having more than six years remaining on his contract, a specific clause allowed the club to terminate his employment without paying out the remainder of the agreed terms.

Assistant coach Calum McFarlane has stepped in as interim head coach until the end of the season, with Chelsea officials confirming a new permanent manager will be appointed in the summer. The club is reportedly exploring several options, including:

  • Xabi Alonso
  • Andoni Iraola
  • Marco Silva

Fabregas’s rising stock in Serie A

While Chelsea casts a wide net, Fabregas is making significant strides in Italy. As head coach of Como, he has guided the club to fifth place in Serie A, putting them in a strong position to secure Champions League football next season. His impressive work has not gone unnoticed, with Fabregas becoming the first non-Italian to win the prestigious Bearzot Award as Italy’s coach of the year. Esteemed figures like Fabio Capello and Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti have publicly praised his coaching prowess, with Capello even suggesting Fabregas would be “ready” for the AC Milan job.

Fabregas’s deep commitment to Como is evident. He first joined the club as a player in 2022 when they were in Serie B and now holds a minority shareholder stake. He conducts all official media duties in fluent Italian and is known for his relentless work ethic, often arriving at Como’s training ground at 7am and not leaving until after midnight. His influence extends to all football decisions, as he told The Telegraph: “I take all the football decisions… I’m so happy and lucky that we have a president that trusts me a lot and has given me the confidence to go and take all the football decisions. That, for me, is really important.”

Addressing the speculation, Fabregas, speaking to Telegraph Sport, acknowledged the allure of England’s top flight but stressed his current focus. “The Premier League is the best league in the world. I’ve always been very, very clear about it. I felt it as a player, I feel it as a coach, as a fan,” he stated. “But [José] Mourinho told me one day when I was at Chelsea: ‘I still have 30 years to work.’ So, hypothetically, I could be here [Como] for 10 years, and you can still go to the Premier League in 12, 15 years. Football is so unpredictable, it changes in one second. One day, you are the best. The day after, you are the worst. So let’s enjoy the moment. I like to enjoy the moment. It’s beautiful what we are living here. Let’s see what the future holds.”

Despite his present dedication to Como, Fabregas did confirm to Telegraph Sport that he will “of course” one day return to the Premier League as a coach, leaving the door open for a potential future reunion with his former club.
