The debate over who the best footballer in the world really is will never disappear. Some fans prefer trophies, others rely on the eye test, while many now look at advanced statistics to separate the elite from the merely excellent. With the 2025/26 season nearing its conclusion, WhoScored ratings have once again provided a fascinating insight into the players dominating Europe’s top five leagues. From teenage sensations to proven superstars, these are the 20 highest-rated footballers in Europe this season.

20. Mason Greenwood (Marseille) – 7.28

Mason Greenwood’s footballing ability has never really been questioned, and his performances for Marseille this season have once again highlighted his natural talent. The English forward has scored 16 Ligue 1 goals and has often been the difference-maker in tight matches for the French side. Marseille have relied heavily on his finishing ability, especially during difficult periods of the campaign when creativity elsewhere in the team dried up. Despite renewed criticism surrounding his attitude and inconsistency in recent months, his numbers remain among the best in the division. Whether he ever returns to the Premier League remains uncertain, but purely on performances, he has earned his place among Europe’s highest-rated players.

19. Kenan Yildiz (Juventus) – 7.28

Juventus have looked far more like their old selves this season, and Kenan Yildiz has played a major role in that resurgence. The Turkish youngster has brought excitement, unpredictability and composure to a side that had badly lacked attacking inspiration in recent years. With 10 goals and six assists in Serie A, Yildiz has quickly established himself as one of the brightest young attackers in Europe. His confidence on the ball and ability to influence games under pressure have made him a fan favourite in Turin. At just 20 years old, it already feels like Juventus are building their future around him.

18. Luka Vuskovic (Hamburg) – 7.32

It is not often that a teenage centre-back becomes one of the most productive players in a league, but Luka Vuskovic has done exactly that at Hamburg. On loan from Tottenham, the Croatian defender has scored seven Bundesliga goals while also dominating aerial battles at the other end of the pitch. His combination of physicality, timing and composure has made him one of the biggest revelations in Germany this season. Hamburg have benefitted enormously from his presence both defensively and offensively. Spurs supporters are already dreaming about what he could become in North London over the next few years.

Raphinha has quietly enjoyed another outstanding campaign at Barcelona despite spending part of the season struggling with injuries. The Brazilian winger returned strongly during the second half of the campaign and immediately improved Barcelona’s attack with his direct running and creativity. His 14 goal contributions in just 13 starts underline how effective he has been whenever available. There was a time when his move from Leeds United to Barcelona raised questions, but he now looks completely at home at the highest level. The consistency of his end product has become one of the key reasons Barcelona remain competitive on multiple fronts.

16. Jeremy Doku (Manchester City) – 7.37

Jeremy Doku’s raw talent has always been obvious, but this season he finally looks like a complete attacking player. In previous years, his dribbling often lacked purpose, with promising runs ending in poor decisions or wasteful finishing. Under Pep Guardiola, however, the Belgian winger has refined his game significantly and become far more productive in the final third. His tally of 10 goal involvements in just 18 appearances reflects that improvement clearly. When Doku is at his best, few defenders in Europe can live with his pace and acceleration.

15. Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid) – 7.37

Vinicius Junior may not have dominated headlines in the same way as previous seasons, but his performances remain world class. The Brazilian continues to terrorise defenders with his pace, movement and ability in one-on-one situations. He has produced 15 goals and five assists in 26 starts, numbers that many players would dream of reaching. Rumours about his future at Real Madrid continue to circulate, though the idea of Los Blancos losing him still feels almost impossible to imagine. Even during difficult moments for the club, Vinicius remains one of their biggest match-winners.

14. Hakan Calhanoglu (Inter Milan) – 7.37

Few midfielders in world football control games as elegantly as Hakan Calhanoglu. The Turkish international has once again been the heartbeat of Inter Milan’s midfield, dictating tempo while also contributing crucial goals and assists. His set-piece quality remains among the very best in Europe and has regularly provided Inter with a decisive edge in important matches. Beyond the statistics, his leadership and calmness under pressure have been invaluable during another title-challenging campaign. Inter’s recent success simply would not look the same without him orchestrating everything from midfield.

Lautaro Martinez has reached the stage where scoring goals consistently almost feels routine. The Argentine striker has once again led Inter Milan’s attack brilliantly, combining relentless work rate with clinical finishing in front of goal. Although his total may end slightly below the 20-goal mark this season, his influence stretches far beyond statistics alone. Martinez continues to deliver in the biggest moments and remains one of the most complete forwards in European football. With another World Cup approaching, Argentina will once again depend heavily on his leadership and goals.

12. Alejandro Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen) – 7.40

After Bayer Leverkusen lost several major figures last summer, many expected the club to decline sharply this season. Alejandro Grimaldo, however, stepped up magnificently and became the driving force behind their push for European qualification. Operating from left wing-back, the Spaniard has contributed eight goals and eight assists while remaining incredibly reliable defensively. His technical quality and delivery from wide areas continue to make him one of the most dangerous full-backs in Europe. Grimaldo’s decision to stay at Leverkusen now looks like a masterstroke for both player and club.

11. David Raum (RB Leipzig) – 7.43

David Raum may not receive the same level of attention as some of Leipzig’s attacking stars, but his impact this season has been enormous. The German full-back has delivered consistently high performances and won five Bundesliga Man of the Match awards along the way. His energy down the left flank has given Leipzig a constant attacking outlet throughout the campaign. Raum’s crossing ability and work rate have made him one of the most reliable players in the division. In a team full of exciting attackers, he has quietly become one of the club’s most important figures.

10. Luis Diaz (Bayern Munich) – 7.44

Luis Diaz has taken his game to another level since leaving Liverpool for Bayern Munich. While he was always capable of producing moments of brilliance in England, he now looks far more decisive and complete in the final third. The Colombian winger has thrived alongside Harry Kane and Michael Olise, forming one of the most dangerous attacking trios in Europe. His 15 Bundesliga goals only tell part of the story, because his movement and intensity have transformed Bayern’s entire attack. Few players in world football play with the same combination of flair, aggression and confidence that Diaz brings every single week.

Manchester United’s season has once again been filled with inconsistency and frustration, but Bruno Fernandes continues to carry the side almost single-handedly at times. The Portuguese midfielder has delivered goals, assists and leadership despite the chaos around him. Winning the FWA Player of the Year award may have divided opinion, especially with United failing to challenge for major trophies, but his individual performances have been impossible to ignore. Fernandes is once again close to reaching 20 assists in a Premier League season, which would underline just how creative he remains. No matter how difficult things become at Old Trafford, he continues to stand out as their most influential player.

8. Yan Diomande (RB Leipzig) – 7.49

Every season produces a breakout star who suddenly becomes the focus of Europe’s biggest clubs, and this year that player is Yan Diomande. The RB Leipzig winger has been sensational, combining blistering pace with composure and end product in the final third. Scoring 12 goals and adding seven assists in just 22 Bundesliga starts is an incredible return for such a young wide player. His ability to beat defenders one-on-one has already drawn comparisons to some of the best wingers in the world. Liverpool are among the clubs heavily linked with him, and it is easy to understand why after watching his performances this season.

7. Erling Haaland (Manchester City) – 7.51

For Erling Haaland, scoring goals has become as natural as breathing. The Manchester City striker has once again produced extraordinary numbers, hitting 26 league goals despite City enduring a more difficult campaign than usual. Defenders still struggle to cope with his movement, strength and ruthless finishing inside the penalty area. Even in matches where he barely touches the ball, Haaland only needs a single opportunity to completely change the game. His consistency over the last few seasons has firmly established him as one of the defining players of this generation.

6. Federico Dimarco (Inter Milan) – 7.53

Federico Dimarco continues to redefine what a modern wing-back can be. The Italian international has contributed six goals and an astonishing 17 assists this season, making him one of the most productive defenders anywhere in Europe. His crossing ability is arguably unmatched, while his understanding with Inter’s forwards has become one of the club’s biggest strengths. Although some critics point to his defensive limitations, his attacking influence more than compensates for it. Few defenders in world football have been as entertaining or effective to watch this season as Dimarco.

Nico Paz has emerged as one of the most exciting young midfielders in world football during his breakthrough campaign with Como. The Argentine playmaker has thrived under Cesc Fabregas, producing moments of quality far beyond his years. With 12 goals, six assists and an incredible 11 Man of the Match awards, he has carried Como through several difficult matches almost by himself. Paz combines elegance on the ball with intelligence and composure that usually belong to far more experienced players. It now feels inevitable that one of Europe’s elite clubs will attempt to sign him very soon.

4. Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid) – 7.81

Kylian Mbappe’s first season at Real Madrid has not been entirely smooth, but individually he has still been exceptional. The French superstar has scored 24 league goals while often carrying Madrid’s attack during difficult periods of the campaign. Criticism surrounding the club’s recent collapse has occasionally landed at his feet, though in reality he has been one of the few consistently delivering at the highest level. Mbappe’s pace and finishing remain almost impossible to defend against, even for elite defenders. If France enjoy a strong World Cup this summer, he could yet strengthen his case for the Ballon d’Or.

3. Michael Olise (Bayern Munich) – 7.89

Michael Olise has fully exploded into superstardom since joining Bayern Munich. The former Crystal Palace winger has become one of the most complete attacking players in Europe, capable of destroying teams as both a creator and goalscorer. His tally of 15 goals and 19 assists in just 23 league matches is simply outrageous. Olise’s unpredictability is what makes him so dangerous, because defenders never know whether he will beat them on the outside or cut inside and finish himself. At only 24 years old, he still feels far from reaching his peak.

2. Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) – 8.07

Harry Kane is playing the best football of his career, which is an astonishing statement considering how consistently brilliant he has been for more than a decade. The England captain has delivered 38 goal involvements in just 24 appearances, proving once again that he is far more than just a traditional striker. Kane’s passing range, movement and football intelligence make him one of the most complete forwards the game has seen in recent years. Bayern Munich’s attack has revolved around him all season, and he has responded with relentless consistency. With the World Cup approaching, England supporters will believe that if Kane stays fit, anything is possible.

Lamine Yamal is no longer simply football’s brightest young talent — he is already one of the best players in the world. The Barcelona teenager has dominated matches this season with a level of confidence and creativity that seems almost unnatural for someone his age. His 27 goal involvements in 26 La Liga starts are extraordinary, but statistics alone still fail to fully capture how special he looks on the pitch. Yamal plays with the kind of freedom and imagination that instantly reminds supporters of Lionel Messi’s early years at Barcelona. At just 18 years old, he already appears capable of leading both club and country into a new era of dominance.
