Aston Villa ended their 30-year wait for a major trophy after defeating Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final in Istanbul on Wednesday night. According to BBC Sport, the victory secured Villa’s first major silverware since lifting the League Cup in 1996 and their first European title since winning the European Cup in 1982.

The night was also a testament to the unparalleled European prowess of manager Unai Emery, who extended his own competition record by clinching his fifth Europa League title. The Spanish tactician has now won five out of his six finals in the competition, cementing his status as its most successful coach.

Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emi Buendia, and Morgan Rogers sealed the emphatic victory for Aston Villa. The triumph caps a remarkable season for the Birmingham club, which also secured a return to the Champions League for next season after finishing in the Premier League’s top five, a feat confirmed by a crucial 4-2 win over Liverpool.

Emery’s unparalleled European success

Since arriving from Villarreal in 2022, Unai Emery has transformed Aston Villa’s fortunes. BBC Sport noted that Villa were hovering just above the Premier League relegation zone when Emery took charge. Less than two years later, the club has become a European force once again.

The manager was quick to share the credit for his record-breaking success. “I am thankful to [co-owners] Nassef [Sawiris] and Wes [Edens]… they are supporting always. I am thankful to the supporters and I am thankful for the players,” Emery stated after the match. “All the times I am successful in this competition I needed good players. Now I am so thankful for the players, they are following our ambitions. They are protagonists on the field. This is the reason I am not feeling the king in this competition. I am feeling really thankful – we are the kings together.”

A historic turnaround for Aston Villa

The victory represents one of Aston Villa’s greatest modern achievements and gives a new generation of supporters a memorable European triumph. According to BBC reports, Villa had not won a European trophy since their legendary European Cup success in 1982.

The journey to Istanbul was supported by an estimated 20,000 Aston Villa fans, far exceeding the official ticket allocation of 10,758, with Prince William also in attendance to witness the historic occasion. Despite operating under financial restrictions that often necessitate selling talent annually to comply with Profit and Sustainability rules, the club’s strategic investments, such as the £16 million deal for Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough, have clearly paid dividends.

Midfielder Youri Tielemans, a key figure in Villa’s season, reflected on the challenging path to glory. “I feel amazing. My voice is a bit gone but it’s all good. We put in a shift, a top performance, we had a great season. To top it off with this is amazing,” Tielemans told TNT. “It’s been a season with a lot of ups and downs. We started so so bad. Our standards were very poor. The way we turned things around was a credit to the players and staff. We kept working, believing. We got the win in the end, Champions League next season and a trophy.”
