The United States has confirmed that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) national football team will be permitted to enter the country for the 2026 World Cup, despite recently imposed travel restrictions related to an ongoing Ebola epidemic.
Washington had announced on Monday a tightening of health controls at its borders, specifically prohibiting foreign citizens who had traveled to Uganda, the DRC, or South Sudan within the last 21 days from entering the US. This measure was implemented to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus, which is currently affecting the DRC.
However, an exception will be made for any member of the Congolese team who has passed through their home country in the 21 days prior to their arrival in the USA. These individuals will be subjected to rigorous health protocols, including the same testing and isolation procedures applied to American citizens returning from the DRC. A US State Department official, speaking anonymously to AFP, confirmed the decision, stating, “We expect the RDC team to be able to participate in the World Cup.”
Team preparations and schedule
The Congolese team has already undertaken part of its training in Europe, preparing for their World Cup campaign. For the tournament, the DRC squad will establish its cantonment in Houston, Texas. Their Group K fixtures are set to unfold across multiple venues:

The US official did not address the specific arrangements or implications for the team’s presence in Mexico for their match against Colombia.
Supporters face continued restrictions
While the national team receives a special waiver, the same derogation will not apply to Congolese supporters. Fans traveling from the DRC will remain subject to the general travel restrictions, meaning those who have been in the country within the 21-day window will be denied entry to the United States. This decision, reported on May 20, 2026, ensures the team’s participation while maintaining strict public health measures for the wider population.
