Xabi Alonso is set to officially take the reins as Chelsea’s new permanent manager on July 1st, replacing the sacked Liam Rosenior. However, the Spaniard is already making his presence felt in the club’s recruitment strategy, with plans for a significant squad overhaul this summer, particularly focusing on the forward line. This proactive approach by Alonso could spell an early end to Liam Delap’s tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso’s striker mandate
According to GiveMeSport, Alonso has identified the striker position as a key priority ahead of the new season. Chelsea have already added Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, while Joao Pedro can operate across the front line, but Alonso is believed to want a more traditional centre-forward to lead his attack.
That decision could have major consequences for Liam Delap.
Liam Delap’s precarious position
Liam Delap arrived at Chelsea just 12 months ago from Ipswich Town, signing a substantial six-year deal. The move, reportedly worth £30 million with a weekly wage around £100,000, according to The Sun, followed a fine season with Ipswich that had built a growing reputation for the young forward. However, his time at Stamford Bridge has been challenging, managing just one goal this season and struggling to secure regular game time.

The impending arrival of a new, high-profile striker under Alonso’s direction would undoubtedly push Delap further down the pecking order. Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke commented on the situation, stating, “Chelsea, a lot will depend on if they’re bringing a new striker in the summer, if they’re bringing a new big striker to come in and play in the side. That’d obviously push Delap down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and that might force the player to consider his options as well, in that respect.”
With Alonso reportedly favoring a different type of striker, Delap’s future at Chelsea appears increasingly bleak. A move away would allow him to prioritize consistent playing time, an opportunity that clubs like Everton are reportedly keen to offer. For all parties involved, a departure is now seen as the most logical step for the young forward.
