Barcelona are reportedly in advanced negotiations to secure the signing of Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon, a move that could significantly impact the future of Marcus Rashford, currently on loan at the Catalan club. Despite the active pursuit of Gordon, Barcelona’s interest in retaining Rashford appears to remain strong.
Gordon’s potential move to Camp Nou
The pursuit of Anthony Gordon has intensified, with Barcelona entering direct talks with Newcastle United. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Spanish giants have already agreed personal terms with the England international, who was recently named in his country’s World Cup squad. The urgency from Barcelona to finalize the deal quickly suggests a high priority for manager Hansi Flick.
Gordon, known for his versatility, primarily operates as a left-sided forward but can also effectively play on the right wing or as a central striker. This adaptability is understood to be a key factor in Barcelona’s interest. The 23-year-old’s situation at Newcastle has been under scrutiny after he was left out of the squad for the final weeks of the Premier League season. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe alluded to the situation, stating it was “with a partial view to the future.” The Magpies’ failure to qualify for European football next season may also play a role in Gordon’s potential departure, despite previous interest from European heavyweights like Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
Rashford’s uncertain return to Manchester United
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford’s loan spell at Barcelona is set to conclude at the end of June, with the forward due to return to Manchester United. Rashford enjoyed a productive season at Camp Nou, contributing 14 goals and 10 assists across all competitions. His loan agreement includes an option-to-buy clause valued at approximately £26 million.

Rashford’s future at Old Trafford has been subject to considerable speculation, particularly following a tumultuous season that saw him ostracized from the first-team squad by former manager Ruben Amorim. However, a significant managerial change has occurred at United, with Michael Carrick replacing Amorim. Carrick, who played alongside Rashford during his final seasons as a player for the Red Devils, now faces a decision on the forward’s future. Speaking to Sky Sports, cited by Sportbible, Carrick acknowledged the uncertainty: “There are decisions to be made in time on certain things. Marcus is in that situation. At this point in time, nothing has been decided. It will be at a certain point, because it has to be, but at this stage nothing has been decided.”
Intriguingly, Barcelona’s interest in Rashford is not expected to wane even if they secure Gordon’s signature. Ben Jacobs reports that manager Hansi Flick is “open” to the prospect of signing both players, suggesting Barcelona could be looking to significantly bolster their attacking options for the upcoming season with two dynamic forwards.
