Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen has formally requested to leave the club, citing a desire for increased playing opportunities. The 24-year-old, who arrived at Stamford Bridge for just over £20 million in the summer of 2024, has struggled to establish himself as the undisputed number one and now seeks a move away.

Jorgensen’s current position as the second-choice goalkeeper behind Robert Sanchez is set to become even more precarious next season with the impending return of Mike Penders from his loan spell. This increased competition appears to be the primary driver behind Jorgensen’s decision, which he directly communicated to Chelsea’s head of goalkeeping, Ben Roberts, according to GIVEMESPORT.

Jorgensen’s Chelsea tenure and costly error

Despite signing a lengthy seven-year contract upon his arrival from Villarreal, Jorgensen has made only 34 appearances across two seasons for the Blues. A mere 11 of these have come in the Premier League, highlighting his limited involvement in top-flight action. His time at Chelsea has also been marked by a significant error in a Champions League fixture away at Paris Saint-Germain, a match where he was given a surprise start by then-head coach Liam Rosenior.

Following that incident, Rosenior defended his goalkeeper, stating, “Players make mistakes. Filip’s not the first one and that’s part of football. Credit to him, he held his hands up in the dressing room. I make mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes. Sometimes they’re more costly. This is one of those moments. What we have to do for Rob [Sánchez] and for Filip and for all of the players is look after each other.”

The current request is not Jorgensen’s first attempt to secure a transfer; he also sought an exit in January. At the time, his ambition was reportedly to lock down Denmark’s number one spot with an eye on playing at the 2026 World Cup. However, Denmark ultimately did not qualify for the tournament.

Clubs interested and Chelsea’s stance

Chelsea are understood to be open to a sale for Jorgensen. Several clubs have previously shown interest in the goalkeeper, including:

  • Porto
  • Besiktas
  • Genoa

More recently, Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah has been credited with an interest. However, Al-Qadsiah’s immediate transfer priorities for the summer reportedly lie elsewhere, focusing first on adding a centre-back, winger, and forward to their squad.

Jorgensen’s initial arrival at Stamford Bridge was met with enthusiasm, as he remarked, “This move is a dream come true. I am very excited to have signed for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world. I can’t wait to get to know everyone and to start playing with all my new teammates.” Two years on, the dream appears to have shifted, as the young goalkeeper now prioritizes consistent minutes over his current role at Chelsea.
