Kevin De Bruyne has openly criticized former Napoli manager Antonio Conte’s tactical approach and alleged unfulfilled promises, casting significant doubt over his own future at the Italian club. The 34-year-old midfielder’s comments follow Conte’s departure from Napoli by mutual consent at the conclusion of the season.
A season of tactical discord and unfulfilled promises
De Bruyne, a pivotal figure for Napoli, voiced his profound dissatisfaction with Conte’s philosophy, which he described as overly defensive. “Obviously it was difficult for me because Conte has a very different vision of football to mine,” De Bruyne told Het Nieuwsblad. “In truth, I never had the opportunity to play in my preferred position. In any case, I always tried to give my all for the team.”
Conte’s two-season tenure at Napoli was a mixed bag. He famously led the club to their fourth Scudetto in his debut season. However, the subsequent season saw a dip in league performance, with Napoli finishing second in Serie A, 11 points adrift of champions Inter Milan. Their Champions League campaign was also dismal, concluding with an early exit in the League Phase, though they did secure the Supercoppa Italiana.
De Bruyne’s criticism, also reported by GIVEMESPORT, centered on the team’s playing style under the Italian coach. He highlighted a perceived lack of attacking intent and enjoyment in the game. “There were promises made last summer on the way that we would be playing, but at the end of the day not much of it happened. I found that a pity. Football needs to be enjoyable, and unfortunately I found that aspect lacking. There’s no point beating around the bush, we have different visions of football. I never got to play in my position under Conte.”

Injury woes compound De Bruyne’s frustration
De Bruyne’s personal season was also hampered by significant injury. He suffered a serious thigh/hamstring injury in October, which sidelined him for four months. This limited the Belgian international to just 21 matches across all competitions. In those appearances, De Bruyne recorded:
5 goals and 4 assists overall
5 goals and 2 assists in Serie A
For context, Napoli’s top scorer, Rasmus Højlund, managed 12 goals, further illustrating the team’s struggles in front of goal that De Bruyne alluded to.

Future uncertain as contract nears end
With one year remaining on his contract, De Bruyne has made it clear he intends to discuss his position with the club. His comments suggest a potential exit from Napoli this summer, driven by his desire for a more aligned tactical vision. “I still have a year left on my contract, but I want to talk about it,” he stated. “There was a lot of talk last year of how we’d play and what we would do, but none of it happened.”
As De Bruyne prepares to join Belgium’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, his club future remains a significant talking point, with his candid remarks setting the stage for crucial discussions in the coming weeks.
