Ibrahima Konate has formally announced his departure from Liverpool FC, confirming he will leave the club as a free agent when his contract expires on June 30. The 27-year-old France international brings an end to a three-year spell at Anfield, which saw him contribute to multiple trophy successes.

Konate originally joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in a £36 million deal during the summer of 2021. Despite talks between the centre-back’s representatives and Anfield chiefs regarding a contract extension having been ongoing since November 2023, no agreement was ultimately reached, leading to his exit.

During his tenure with the Reds, Konate played a crucial role in a period of significant achievement for the club. His time at Liverpool saw him lift an impressive collection of silverware, including the Premier League title, the FA Cup, and two League Cups.

Emotional farewell and new chapter

Konate shared an emotional message across his social media channels following his announcement, as reported by Paul Gorst, Liverpoolecho correspondent. Reflecting on his journey, he spoke of fulfilling childhood ambitions.

“Five years ago, I arrived as a young player with big dreams. Today I leave with memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life,” Konate wrote.

The defender also touched upon personal hardships experienced during his time at the club, including the loss of his brother, Diogo, and his father earlier this year, emphasizing that his commitment to Liverpool never wavered through these difficult moments. He expressed regret at not being able to bid a proper farewell to the fans in person, stating, “I am deeply saddened that I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at my last game. At that moment I didn’t know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you.” Ultimately, he signaled a clear intent for his future.

“This isn’t an easy goodbye. But it’s time for a new challenge and a new chapter.”

Liverpool officially confirmed Konate’s departure on Sunday evening, marking the conclusion of his time on Merseyside.
