Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has shattered NFL financial records, agreeing to a two-year contract extension that guarantees him an unprecedented $504.75 million.
The deal, announced on June 10, 2026, solidifies the 30-year-old’s future with the franchise until 2033 and marks the first time an NFL player has secured a contract worth over half a billion dollars.
The revised agreement, a reworking of his previous 10-year, $450 million deal signed in 2020, could see Mahomes earn up to $522.25 million through various incentives and escalators. The new money injected into the contract is valued at $239.05 million, according to NFL.com.
A new benchmark for NFL contracts
From 2027 onwards, Mahomes’ contract will carry an average annual value of $64 million, setting a new NFL benchmark. This figure significantly eclipses the $60 million per year deal agreed upon by Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in 2024, highlighting Mahomes’ unique standing in the league.

Chiefs chief executive Clark Hunt praised the quarterback’s impact, stating, “Over the past decade Patrick has become one of the most iconic, beloved sports figures of all-time. He has helped lead our franchise to five Super Bowl appearances and three championships, he has been instrumental in shaping the Chiefs brand and putting Kansas City on the world stage, and on top of it all he has been an outstanding role model in the community. Patrick is a generational talent and an elite human being, and I’m so excited he will continue to lead our team into the future.”
Sustained success and local commitment
Mahomes has been the driving force behind the Chiefs’ recent dynasty, guiding them to five Super Bowl appearances and securing three Lombardi Trophies in 2020, 2023, and 2024. The team narrowly missed out on becoming the first to win three consecutive Super Bowls, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025.
His commitment to Kansas City extends beyond the gridiron. Mahomes holds a minority share in MLB’s Kansas City Royals and is a co-owner of the National Women’s Soccer League team KC Current, demonstrating a deep investment in the city’s sports landscape.
The extension comes as Mahomes recovers from a significant left knee anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury suffered last December, which prematurely ended his season.
His absence was keenly felt, with the Chiefs missing the NFL play-offs for the first time since the 2014 season. Despite the injury, the franchise has shown unwavering faith in their star quarterback’s long-term health and ability to continue delivering championships.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the long-term commitment, Mahomes said, “I’m just so excited to be here for life and to be a part of Chiefs kingdom for even longer. We have so much more to do. Let’s go out and do it. Let’s go win some more.”
The deal, reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter, among others, cements Mahomes’ place as not only one of the sport’s most successful players but also its highest-paid, setting a new financial standard for elite athletes in American football.
