According to The Standard, the FIFA World Cup 2026 delivered an early contender for match of the tournament in Los Angeles, as Iran and New Zealand battled to a thrilling 2-2 draw at SoFi Stadium. The high-octane encounter unfolded against a significant geopolitical backdrop, adding layers of tension and emotion to the contest.
Geopolitical storm surrounds Iran’s World Cup opener
The Standard reported that the fixture marked a historic first for a World Cup, with a host nation (USA) at war with a participant (Iran) as the tournament kicked off. Iran’s participation has been under threat since a bombing campaign by the United States and Israel began in February. The team’s preparations were also complicated by visa issues, forcing a change of training venue from the US to Mexico, and 11 non-playing Iranian officials were denied entry into the States for the matches.
Inside the stadium, the atmosphere was charged. Los Angeles’ substantial Iranian diaspora made their presence felt, booing the Iranian national anthem before kickoff. Visible among the crowd were ‘Lion and Sun’ flags, the emblem of Iran before the 1979 Islamic revolution, despite efforts by FIFA to ban them.
On the pitch, New Zealand, spearheaded by Nottingham Forest’s Chris Wood, took an early lead in the seventh minute. Wood held up the ball before combining with Motherwell player Eli Just, who steered a volley past Iran goalkeeper Alireza Behranvand. Iran captain Mehdi Taremi hit the post before the equalizer arrived in the 32nd minute. After New Zealand defender Finn Surman denied Shahriyar Moghanloo, Ramin Rezaeian found the net.

Just restored New Zealand’s lead 10 minutes into the second half, again assisted by Wood. However, Iran responded once more, with Rezaeian crossing from the right for Mohammad Mohebbi to guide a header home, leveling the score at 2-2 and ensuring a dramatic share of the points.
Uruguay held to a draw by Saudi Arabia in Miami
In the day’s other World Cup fixture, two-time winners Uruguay were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in Miami, The Standard reported. Saudi Arabia, who famously shocked eventual winners Argentina in their opener at the last World Cup, once again proved a resilient opponent.
Uruguay’s Federico Vinas saw a header saved by Mohammed Al-Owais after 30 minutes, but it was Saudi Arabia who broke the deadlock. After Al-Amri forced Fernando Muslera into a save from a corner in the 38th minute, he opened the scoring three minutes later, turning in a rebound after Muslera had parried Mohamed Kanno’s header.
Manuel Ugarte hit the post for Uruguay after an hour, and they finally found their equalizer with 10 minutes remaining. Maxi Araujo steered home after another Vinas header was saved. Substitute Brian Rodriguez curled an effort wide, and Al-Owais made crucial stoppage-time saves from Nicolas de la Cruz and Federico Valverde to secure a valuable point for Saudi Arabia.
