Lewis Hamilton secured his inaugural Grand Prix victory with Ferrari at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona last weekend, a landmark moment for the seven-time Formula 1 world champion. The win marks a significant turning point after a challenging debut season with the Italian team, during which he failed to secure a single podium finish.

At 41 years old, Hamilton’s move to Ferrari was one of the most anticipated driver transfers in Formula 1 history, following a difficult final period at Mercedes where victories became increasingly rare. His challenging start at Ferrari led to moments of introspection and self-doubt, as he openly criticized his own performances.

Speaking to reporters in Barcelona, Hamilton reflected on the mental hurdles he faced. “The [win] in Silverstone in 2024 was in its own way a monumental moment for me, because it’s a moment where I never thought maybe that I’d ever get to win again,” he stated. He further admitted to questioning his capabilities during his initial struggles with Ferrari. “Then after a year like last year, there was definitely moments that I was like, ‘Sheesh, maybe it is true that, you know, when you get to a certain point, you lose it’.”

However, the British driver quickly dispelled those doubts. “But I’ve proven that you don’t. You always have it and it just takes work. It takes perseverance, that constant believing in yourself to tap into your inner self and keep yourself alive,” Hamilton added, as reported by F1i.com.

Ferrari’s innovative approach pays off

The breakthrough victory in Spain follows consecutive runner-up finishes for Hamilton and coincides with Ferrari’s introduction of a substantial upgrade package. Hamilton had previously challenged Ferrari last season to adopt a more aggressive and inventive approach, and the recent innovations appear to have paid dividends.

He specifically highlighted key developments on the car, noting “a bit on the rear exhaust and the ‘Macarena’ rear wing.” Hamilton praised the team’s responsiveness, remarking, “It’s so early in the season to get to this point. These guys have really listened and really worked hard to add performance and be innovative.”

Despite Mercedes’ perceived dominance throughout the season so far, Ferrari’s strategic upgrades and Hamilton’s return to winning ways suggest a renewed competitive spirit. The victory in Barcelona, shared on the podium with Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Isack Hadjar in Monaco, signals a potential shift in momentum for Hamilton and Ferrari as the season progresses.
