Brazil secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Japan in Houston, progressing to the World Cup last 16, but the post-match headlines were quickly dominated by an unexpected social media exchange involving superstar Neymar.

The forward, an unused substitute in the dramatic win, took to his official X account to directly challenge German mathematician Joachim Klement, whose pre-tournament prediction for Brazil had just been emphatically disproven.

Brazil secures last 16 spot

The match itself saw Japan take a surprise lead in the first half through Kaishu Sano. Brazil responded with a header from Casemiro to level the score, before Gabriel Martinelli netted the late winner, ensuring Brazil’s passage to the knockout stages. They are now set to face the winner of the Ivory Coast versus Norway match in New Jersey on Sunday.

Despite the high stakes, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti opted not to bring Neymar into the game. The forward has only played 14 minutes in this year’s World Cup so far, with Ancelotti explaining, according to SPORTbible, that he “didn’t want to change the structure, because the team had control of the game.”

Klement’s track record and current outlook

Joachim Klement is well-known for his mathematical models that predict World Cup outcomes. His methodology considers a range of factors including GDP per capita, population size, football’s standing in society, and recent world rankings. Klement boasts an impressive record, having correctly predicted the World Cup winners in:

  • 2014 (Germany)
  • 2018 (France)
  • 2022 (Argentina)

However, for the current tournament, Klement had predicted Brazil would top Group C but then suffer a defeat to Japan at this stage – a forecast that Brazil’s victory rendered incorrect.

Following the final whistle, Neymar’s post on X, which quickly garnered 2.8 million views, was a direct jab at the statistician. “Mr. Joachim Klement… please try again at the next World Cup,” Neymar wrote, as reported by SPORTbible.

Klement’s broader prediction for the current World Cup tips the Netherlands to lift the trophy, foreseeing them beating Spain in the semi-finals and Portugal in the final, scheduled for July 19 in New Jersey. Curiously, this specific semi-final pairing of Spain and Portugal is not possible, as they could potentially meet as early as the round of 16. Klement also claimed England would reach the semi-finals.

Despite his past successes, Klement himself takes a measured view of his predictions. Speaking to Der Spiegel, and reported by ESPN, he acknowledged the inherent unpredictability of football. “It’s like playing the lottery. I always say that if anyone places a bet based on my prediction of who will be the next world champion, they’re beyond help,” he stated.
