England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup last 16 ended on a worrying note after midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a freak injury during the post-match celebrations.
As reported by the Mirror, the Brentford midfielder was stretchered off after falling over the advertising hoardings while rushing onto the pitch to celebrate England’s victory with his teammates. Henderson was given oxygen before being transported to a local hospital for further assessment on a suspected wrist injury.
Celebrations turn sour after dramatic England win
The Three Lions booked their place in the quarter-finals after edging a thrilling contest at the Azteca Stadium.
Jude Bellingham starred with two goals, while Harry Kane converted from the penalty spot after Anthony Gordon was fouled. Mexico pushed England all the way through strikes from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez, while Thomas Tuchel’s side also had to play much of the second half with 10 men after Jarrel Quansah was shown a straight red card.

However, the celebrations quickly turned into concern when Henderson, who had remained on the bench throughout the match, sprinted onto the field at full-time. According to the Mirror, the midfielder tripped over the pitch-side advertising boards, injuring his wrist in the process before requiring a stretcher and oxygen treatment.
Tuchel delivers worrying verdict
England boss Thomas Tuchel admitted the early signs were not encouraging.
“Not good, not good,” Tuchel said when asked about Henderson’s condition, while also addressing Quansah’s dismissal.
“Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist, it looks really bad.”

Bellingham also shared an update after the match.
“He’s in a bit of bother, but the medical team have got everything under control, best to not give too much detail when I don’t know too much what’s going on, but everyone was there to support him and even that was a beautiful thing to see.”
Injury could end Henderson’s World Cup
The full extent of Henderson’s injury has yet to be confirmed, but the initial outlook appears concerning.
A review of the footage by X user physioscout suggested Henderson would be “really lucky” to feature again during the tournament. Estimated recovery times vary depending on the diagnosis:

- A wrist or forearm fracture could require 4-8 weeks of recovery.
- An elbow dislocation without a fracture could sideline him for 3-6 weeks.
Henderson has featured only briefly at this World Cup, making a six-minute substitute appearance against Panama during the group stage. He also received a booking while on the sidelines late in the Mexico match.
England will now turn their attention to a quarter-final showdown with Norway, who defeated Brazil 2-1 thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland. While Henderson has not been a regular on the pitch, his potential absence would reduce England’s experienced options as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
