The build-up to France’s World Cup quarter-final clash against Morocco has been overshadowed by an unusual refereeing appointment, prompting a “frosty response” from French manager Didier Deschamps.

FIFA has designated an all-Argentine officiating team for the high-stakes encounter scheduled for July 9th. Facundo Tello will take charge as the main referee, supported by assistants Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, with Dario Herrera named as the fourth official. This marks a unique moment in World Cup history, as it is the first time a match will be handled exclusively by officials from a single nation.

The decision has raised eyebrows, particularly given the ongoing rivalry between Argentina and France, intensified since the 2022 World Cup final. Furthermore, a potential repeat of that final remains on the cards, adding another layer of intrigue to the refereeing choice.

Controversial appointments and a “card-happy” reputation

Facundo Tello arrives with a reputation for strict officiating, often described as “card-happy.” His disciplinary record includes a notable incident from the 2022 Argentine Super Cup where he issued 10 red cards in a single match.

The appointment also comes on the heels of controversy surrounding Argentina’s Round of 32 victory over Morocco. That match, officiated by French referee Francois Letexier, saw a Moroccan goal disallowed by VAR for a “tame foul.” Conversely, a similar challenge in the build-up to Enzo Fernandez’s winning goal for Argentina went uncalled, leading Moroccan players and staff to express concerns that Argentina and Lionel Messi received preferential treatment.

When questioned about the Argentine officials ahead of France’s quarter-final, Didier Deschamps offered a measured, yet pointed, response, as reported by GiveMeSport.

“We have to deal with it. I trust the referees. Our opponent is Morocco, not the referee. Let’s hope ours are as good as Monsieur Letexier was,” Deschamps stated, subtly referencing the previous contentious fixture.

Despite the external narrative, the French camp appears focused on the task at hand. Defender Dayot Upamecano echoed a professional stance on the matter. “I’m not going to focus on who the referee will be. We’ve never done that before, we’re going to focus on Morocco,” he affirmed.

Path to a potential final rematch

France enters the quarter-final as favorites against Morocco. Should they advance, they will face either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals. Argentina, the defending World Cup champions, are also still in contention. If they overcome Switzerland in their quarter-final and then defeat England or Norway in the semi-finals, a highly anticipated rematch of the 2022 final against France could become a reality.

The focus for France remains firmly on overcoming Morocco, but the backdrop of an all-Argentine officiating crew adds an undeniable layer of tension to what is already a crucial World Cup fixture.
