Nimes Olympique is mourning the tragic death of 19-year-old midfielder Teva Rodriguez, who passed away following a serious traffic accident on Sunday. The promising young footballer succumbed to his injuries in hospital, with his club announcing the devastating news in a press release after revealing his disappearance on Tuesday evening.
A promising career cut short
Rodriguez, a central figure in Nimes Olympique’s youth setup, had been with the club since 2012, joining from Uzès. He quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating leadership qualities that saw him captain both the club’s U19 team last year and its reserve squad. A midfielder by trade, he was widely regarded as a player with immense potential, with many predicting a bright future for him within the club.
Le Parisien reported that Rodriguez was promised a future with the first team in National, underscoring the high hopes held for his professional career. His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the French football community, leaving a void at Nimes Olympique.
Tributes pour in for a ‘child of the club’
The club expressed its profound grief in a communiqué, highlighting Rodriguez’s deep connection to Nimes Olympique. “Much more than a player, he was a child of the club, an appreciated teammate, a sincere friend, always driven by his passion for football, his smile and his kindness,” the statement read, according to Le Parisien. “He was marked by the club’s DNA.”

Mickaël Gas, Rodriguez’s reserve team coach, shared his devastation with Midi Libre. “I am touched and devastated… Teva perfectly represented Nîmes Olympique. He was incredibly exemplary on the field, where he was very consistent, where he was a fighter, as well as off the field, where he was so kind… He was a golden person. It’s impossible to find anyone who says anything negative about Teva.”
The French Football Federation (FFF) also reacted to the news, extending its condolences across social media. The FFF stated its “immense sadness” at learning of Rodriguez’s death, joining the club in its pain and sending sincere thoughts to his family, loved ones, teammates, and educators. The entire French football family, it added, shares the grief of the club and its supporters.
Teva Rodriguez’s passing marks a profound loss for Nimes Olympique and for French football, cutting short the life of a talented player who embodied the spirit and promise of his club.
