Bruno Fernandes has spoken publicly for the first time since Portugal’s painful elimination from the 2026 World Cup, admitting that the manner of their exit left him “sad, frustrated and disillusioned”.

Portugal’s campaign ended in the round of 16 following a 1-0 defeat to Spain, with Mikel Merino scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time.

The result brought an abrupt end to a tournament in which Portugal had arrived with ambitions of competing for their first World Cup title.

Several days after the defeat, Fernandes posted a message on social media thanking his teammates, the coaching staff and the Portuguese supporters who followed the team throughout the competition.

Fernandes admits expectations were high

According to A Bola’s report on Fernandes’ message, the Manchester United captain made no attempt to hide the depth of his disappointment.

“Sad, frustrated and disillusioned,” Fernandes wrote.

The midfielder explained that his expectations had been raised not only by the individual quality within the Portugal squad, but also by the relationships established between the players over several years.

“This group of players raised my expectations, not only because of the quality, but also because of the incredible group we have built over these years,” he added.

Portugal had entered the tournament with one of the most experienced and technically gifted squads in the competition, but struggled to produce their best football consistently.

The defeat to Spain confirmed another disappointing World Cup campaign, with Portugal once again failing to reach the quarter-finals.

Portugal’s campaign ends in frustration

Portugal were eliminated after a closely contested match in which they enjoyed positive periods but failed to turn their possession into clear opportunities.

Fernandes later suggested that the team had become too cautious during the second half and allowed Spain to gain control of the contest.

Merino’s late goal left Portugal with almost no time to respond and ensured that Cristiano Ronaldo’s sixth World Cup appearance ended without the trophy he had pursued throughout his international career.

For Fernandes, the disappointment was made greater by his belief that the squad possessed the quality required to progress much further.

His message avoided criticism of individual teammates and instead focused on the collective effort made during the tournament.

Fernandes thanks teammates and supporters

Fernandes also expressed his appreciation for everyone who had worked with the national team during their stay in North America.

“Thank you to all the players, coaching team and all the staff who accompanied us and helped us every day during the World Cup,” he wrote.

The 31-year-old ended his statement by acknowledging the support Portugal received from fans both inside the stadiums and at home.

“To all the Portuguese people, a huge thank you for your support and belief.”

The message arrived at a time of uncertainty around the national team following Roberto Martínez’s departure as head coach after the defeat.
