Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic, who officiated the recent World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 46. His decision follows a highly contentious final match that saw Spain defeat Argentina 1-0, a result overshadowed by a wave of criticism directed at Vincic’s performance.
The World Cup final, held in the USA, was ultimately decided by Ferran Torres’s extra-time goal for Spain. However, the game itself was characterized by its physical and scrappy nature, with Argentina’s aggressive approach throughout the tournament also drawing scrutiny. Vincic faced significant criticism for his handling of the match, particularly a fracas that erupted at full-time. This led to accusations of “corruption” in an online petition launched by disgruntled Argentina fans on change.org.
Online petition calls for replay
The petition, which garnered over 100,000 signatures, explicitly called for a replay of the final, citing unverified video evidence that it claimed showed the referee favouring one side. “We need to ensure the integrity of referees at all levels of the sport,” read a statement on the change.org petition. “If we allow corruption to go unnoticed on this global stage, we are setting a bad example for future generations of athletes and fans. We therefore call on FIFA to review these incidents seriously and transparently, and to consider replaying the final, this time without the influence of a corrupt referee.” Despite the public outcry, Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association, has urged fans to accept the match result.
Vincic’s distinguished career concludes
Vincic’s retirement was confirmed by the Slovenian Football Association, which released a statement noting, “A week after the World Cup final in the USA, Slavko Vincic officially concluded his historic refereeing career at the top of the world.” While the timing coincides with the controversy, there is no indication that his decision is directly linked to the petition or the corruption claims. Instead, it is understood to reflect a choice to conclude his career after reaching its pinnacle and at an age when many referees typically retire.

Despite the criticism surrounding the final, Vincic’s broader career has been highly decorated. He has been a part of UEFA’s elite refereeing group since 2019 and has officiated in other major tournaments, including Euro 2020, Euro 2024, and the 2024 Champions League final. At the recent World Cup, he refereed four matches in total, brandishing 14 cards across these games. This included sending off Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez late in the final and dismissing Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie during Mexico’s last-16 win over Ecuador. Remarkably, both the IFFHS and the Association of Italian Referees named Vincic the tournament’s best referee, even in the face of the post-final backlash.
