LeBron James has begun what appears certain to be the final chapter of his extraordinary NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers. Yet days after the blockbuster move was announced, attention has shifted from Philadelphia’s championship prospects to an unusual and still unconfirmed question: where will James live?
The 41-year-old announced his decision on Friday, July 24, before the move was officially confirmed by Philadelphia two days later. According to NBA.com‘s official report, James agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract after considering retirement and potential reunions with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat.
James described Philadelphia as his final destination, writing: “This is my last decision.”
The four-time NBA MVP will enter a record-extending 24th season in the league and join a Sixers roster featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe.
James has yet to choose his home
Although his new team is based in Philadelphia, James has not publicly confirmed where he intends to live during the 2026–27 season.
During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN insider Shams Charania raised the possibility that James could establish his home in New York or New Jersey rather than Philadelphia.
“Will he live in Philly? Will he live in New Jersey? Will he live in New York? Will he take a chopper back and forth?” Charania asked.
He added that the answers to those questions remain unknown. Reports have suggested that Philadelphia’s proximity to New York was one of several factors that made the 76ers an attractive option, but neither James nor the franchise has confirmed that a helicopter commute is being planned.

Helicopter suggestion unsettles supporters
The reference to helicopter travel quickly prompted concern among basketball fans.
According to Chris Rosvoglou of The Spun, several social media users connected the suggestion with the death of Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.
“I don’t think a basketball player should ever even be close to a helicopter again,” one fan wrote on X.
Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven other people died when their helicopter crashed near Calabasas, California, on January 26, 2020. The National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation found that the pilot became spatially disoriented after continuing into poor weather conditions.
James was deeply affected by Bryant’s death, which occurred one day after he passed the Lakers icon on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.
No travel plan has been confirmed
For now, the helicopter discussion remains speculation rather than an established arrangement.
James may choose to live in Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York or divide his time between several locations. There has been no confirmation that he intends to travel regularly by helicopter, and Charania’s comments presented it only as one possible scenario.
What is certain is that James will finish his career far from Los Angeles, attempting to deliver Philadelphia its first NBA championship since 1983. Before he has even played his first game for the franchise, however, an unanswered question about his daily journey has become one of the NBA offseason’s most sensitive talking points.
