Virginia authorities have arrested Elijah Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy, in connection with the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy, as reported by The Guardian. Mia Bieniemy, 57, is reported to be in stable condition after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

The incident occurred late Sunday at a home in Ashburn, Virginia, a residence the couple maintained from Eric Bieniemy’s previous tenure with the Washington Commanders. Deputies from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, leading to Elijah Zion Bieniemy’s arrest, according to The Guardian.

He faces several serious charges:

• Malicious wounding

• Use of a firearm in commission of a felony

• Discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling

Elijah Bieniemy is currently being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

Bieniemy’s absence from Chiefs practice

Eric Bieniemy, who was with the Chiefs at their practice in St. Joseph, Missouri, earlier on Sunday, was notably absent from Monday’s workout. The Kansas City Chiefs acknowledged the situation in a statement provided to the Associated Press and cited by The Guardian.

“The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them,” the statement read.

The Chiefs are scheduled for a day off on Tuesday before their first full-squad workout at Missouri Western State University on Wednesday.

A recent return to Kansas City

According to The Guardian, the incident comes shortly after Eric Bieniemy’s return to the Chiefs this season, where he rejoined coach Andy Reid’s staff as offensive coordinator, replacing Matt Nagy. Bieniemy was a key part of Reid’s initial staff in Kansas City in 2013, serving five seasons as running backs coach before his promotion to offensive coordinator. During his previous stint in the role, he helped guide the Chiefs to three Super Bowls, winning two of them.

Despite his success, Bieniemy was consistently overlooked for head-coaching opportunities, leading him to accept the offensive coordinator role with the Washington Commanders in 2023. He then spent a season as running backs coach with the Chicago Bears and a year as offensive coordinator at UCLA before returning to Kansas City.

Just last week, Chiefs coach Andy Reid praised Bieniemy’s return to the team, according to The Guardian.

“It’s great to have [Bieniemy] back in the building. He always brings great energy. I’ve told you, he’s one of the more phenomenal guys I have been around at being a leader of men. He is doing that. He’s in there cranking – works his tail off, and I appreciate that. Doesn’t let anything slide by. Does a good job with that,” Reid said.
