Yan Diomande could have entered European football through Chelsea. Instead, the Ivorian teenager chose Leganés, believing that regular football in Spain offered a better future than waiting for opportunities at one of England’s wealthiest clubs.
That decision initially appeared modest. Diomande joined a club fighting relegation, lived in a room at its training ground and made only ten first-team appearances before leaving Spain.
Less than two years later, Real Madrid are reportedly preparing to pay well over €100 million for him. The move has not yet been formally announced, but Diomande is expected to join the Spanish club after an extraordinary debut season with RB Leipzig.
English clubs had already seen his talent
Diomande moved from Ivory Coast to Florida at the age of 15 to continue his education and pursue a professional football career. After impressing in the United States, he travelled to Europe for trials with Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Rangers and Olympiacos.
In a deeply personal letter published by The Players’ Tribune, Diomande recalled that Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze approached him after a Crystal Palace training session to praise his ability. Despite that encouragement, the sequence of trials did not immediately produce a professional contract.
His later account added another layer to the story. According to Alex Young in The Standard’s report on his decision, Diomande eventually found himself choosing between Chelsea and Leganés.
People around him urged him to accept the Chelsea route, but he feared spending an important stage of his development on the bench. Diomande believed Leganés would provide the minutes he needed to improve, increase his value and establish himself as a professional.
A rejection that transformed his career
Choosing Leganés was a considerable gamble. The Spanish club did not possess Chelsea’s facilities, international reach or financial resources, but it could offer a more realistic path to senior football.

Diomande made his La Liga debut at 18 against Real Madrid in March 2025. He later scored twice and provided one assist across ten first-team appearances, despite Leganés being relegated at the end of the season.
As confirmed in Leganés’ account of his development, RB Leipzig activated his release clause during the summer of 2025. The Spanish club also retained a percentage of a future transfer, meaning its faith in the young winger could now produce another significant financial reward.
The move to Germany changed Diomande’s status almost immediately. He finished his first Bundesliga season with 12 goals and eight assists in 33 league appearances, helping Leipzig qualify for the Champions League.
The sister who never stopped believing
Behind the rapid rise lies a personal tragedy that Diomande has struggled to discuss publicly. His younger sister Roxane was the family member who most strongly believed he would become an elite footballer.

Diomande grew up in Abidjan in a home where approximately 25 people slept under the same roof. When someone gave him an imitation Manchester United shirt, he used a black marker to write Cristiano Ronaldo’s name and number on the back.
Roxane treated his ambition seriously when others laughed. She told neighbours that her brother would become one of the best players in the world, and the two children imagined eventually moving to Europe together.
A few weeks after Diomande’s debut against Real Madrid, he received a telephone call informing him that Roxane had died at the age of 15. In his own account, he said he was told that somebody had placed something in her drink at a party, although he never received a complete explanation of what happened.
Football became the only place that felt normal
Diomande wrote that the death left him emotionally numb. While playing for Leganés, he sent most of his earnings home and lived at the training ground in a basic room without a television.

Football became the place where he could process his grief. Every match, goal and successful dribble became connected to the promise he had made to keep Roxane’s name alive.
That motivation followed him to Leipzig, where his development accelerated beyond almost every expectation. He became one of the Bundesliga’s most productive and difficult wide players while still only 19.
His performances also attracted Premier League attention again. Liverpool were repeatedly linked with the winger, but reports indicated that neither the English club nor Paris Saint-Germain were prepared to match the demands surrounding the transfer.
Real Madrid are closing in
According to Mark Dobson in The Guardian’s report on the negotiations, Real Madrid moved ahead after PSG withdrew from the race. The reported fee is well above €100 million, with personal terms also said to have been agreed.

For English clubs, the story carries an uncomfortable element. Chelsea, Palace and Bournemouth all saw Diomande before he had played professional football, while Liverpool were linked after his breakthrough.
Yet it was Leganés that gave him the platform, and Leipzig that turned his potential into production. England’s richest clubs encountered the talent early, but none will receive the final reward.
Diomande once worried that choosing Leganés over Chelsea might end his opportunity to reach the top. It may instead have been the decision that made a move to Real Madrid possible.
