Brazil international Vinicius Jr has committed his long-term future to Real Madrid, signing a new six-year contract that will keep him at the Bernabeu until 2032. The agreement, announced by the club on Thursday, concludes 18 months of negotiations and fends off recent interest from Premier League champions Arsenal.

The 26-year-old winger had entered the final 12 months of his previous deal, prompting concerns about his future. Talks between Real Madrid and Vinicius Jr’s representatives had reportedly reached an impasse until the Spanish giants presented a revised offer on Wednesday, which ultimately led to the breakthrough. Sami Mokbel and Elizabeth Conway reported on BBC Sport that the deal was agreed.

A cornerstone of Real Madrid’s success

Since joining Real Madrid from Brazilian side Flamengo in 2018, Vinicius Jr has established himself as a pivotal figure in one of the club’s most successful eras. He has amassed an impressive record, contributing significantly to their trophy haul:

  • 128 goals in 375 appearances across all competitions for Real Madrid.
  • Helped secure two Champions League titles.
  • Played a key role in three La Liga triumphs.
  • Contributed to one Copa del Rey victory.

On the international stage, Vinicius Jr has scored 13 goals in 54 caps for Brazil. Real Madrid acknowledged his importance in a statement, saying, “Vinicius Jr has become one of the most important players in one of the most successful periods in our history.”

The player himself expressed his deep connection to the club on Instagram, stating: “Eight years at the Bernabeu are too short… Six more years, and then forever.” His return to the club on Monday for pre-season training and medical assessment, following his World Cup campaign, marked the final steps before the official announcement.

Real Madrid’s busy transfer window continues

The confirmation of Vinicius Jr’s extended stay arrives on the same day Real Madrid announced another significant acquisition: Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig. Diomande’s transfer is valued at up to £120 million (140 million euros) and makes him the sixth summer signing under new head coach Jose Mourinho.

Other notable arrivals this summer include:

  • Bernardo Silva
  • Ibrahima Konate
  • Denzel Dumfries
  • Marc Cucurella
  • Carlos Espi

Real Madrid is also actively pursuing Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri, a target also reportedly on Barcelona’s radar. With Vinicius Jr now secured, Arsenal, who would have reportedly accelerated their interest had he rejected Real’s terms, will now need to explore alternative options for a left-sided forward.
