Frank Lampard is convinced José Mourinho did not really mean it. Twenty years on, he still credits the line with reshaping his career.
The story is one of the standout moments in Mourinho, the three-part Netflix series that premiered on 11 August 2026. Days before a Chelsea season, the manager walked into the shower area and told his midfielder he was the best player on the planet, before immediately qualifying it.
“You are the best player in the world but you can’t be yet because you haven’t got titles.”
Lampard’s reply, by his own admission, was the polite response of a man who knew he was being worked on.

“I didn’t agree with it but I was like, ‘Well, thanks, boss.'”
He is candid about not buying the compliment.
“I don’t ever think he thought I was the best player in the world because I wasn’t, but what he did was boosted me up.”
“It had one of the biggest effects on my life, and that’s a conversation in the shower.”

A Ballon d’Or runner-up out of a locker-room chat
Lampard finished second in the 2005 Ballon d’Or, behind Ronaldinho, after a Chelsea season in which he ran the middle of Mourinho’s first Premier League-winning team. Telling him he was almost the world’s best was not, in that context, a wild claim, which is what made the second half of the sentence work.
The review of the series in The Federal, published on Tuesday, casts the manager as a “love-bomber” who lavished praise on favoured players and could turn on them when the mood shifted. The Lampard scene is offered as the purest example: a compliment shaped as a challenge that only worked because Lampard both saw through it and responded to it anyway.
Two years of access, from Ferguson to Ibrahimović
The series was directed by Joe Pearlman and produced by John Battsek and Miles Coleman, filmed over two years with what Netflix describes as exclusive access to Mourinho across a managerial career of more than two decades that has taken him from FC Porto to elite clubs in five countries. The list of interviewees includes Sir Alex Ferguson, John Terry, Iker Casillas, Didier Drogba, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Marcelo, Samuel Eto’o, Javier Zanetti, Petr Čech and Lampard himself.

Back at the Bernabéu
Mourinho does not have to lean on old footage for relevance. Real Madrid confirmed on 11 June 2026 that he had signed a three-year deal to take over the first team, with his return to the Bernabéu formally beginning at pre-season on 13 July. The man being profiled is currently running one of the most scrutinised dressing rooms in the game, two decades after the shower conversation his former midfielder still quotes back.
