Barcelona opened their title defence at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero with a 5-0 rout of Elche, and the loudest moment belonged to a player who had spent an hour on the bench. Anthony Gordon replaced Lamine Yamal in the 65th minute and needed roughly two minutes on the pitch to justify his summer move.
Playing off the left, the 25-year-old slipped a pass through for captain Raphinha to make it 3-0. Four minutes later he cut the ball back for Fermín López to finish into an empty net for 4-0, the two assists landing inside six minutes of his introduction.
Sportbible reported that the cameo made Gordon the first player in the 21st century to register two assists on his La Liga debut.
That is an eye-catching number for a player whose creative output had gone the other way in England. Gordon’s two assists at Elche matched his entire Premier League assist return for Newcastle in 2025-26, delivered in the six minutes it took him to open his Barcelona account.

A £70m bet that paid off in an hour
Gordon’s arrival was one of the more unexpected transfers of the European window. Barcelona pushed through a £70 million deal for the England international, sold on his ability to give Hansi Flick’s front line something it lacked last season: a left-sided winger who takes on his full-back and gets to the byline.
The immediate trade-off was that Karim Adeyemi, another summer arrival, started on the left flank while Gordon waited. When the switch came, his most talked-about touch was arguably the assist he did not turn into a goal. Clean through with only the goalkeeper to beat, he rolled the ball across the six-yard box for López to walk in, a piece of unselfishness Barcelona supporters seized on.
Flick ‘delighted’ as Gordon settles in
Gordon’s own reading of the night was more about the collective than the record.
“It was a top performance. I think it was the perfect start, five goals scored and none conceded,” he told reporters after the win.

“I feel so good. I have felt so good since I arrived. The guys have made me feel so welcome, I feel at home already. The city is amazing. The people are so friendly.”
Hansi Flick struck a similar note about the opening night.
“We’re delighted with the fantastic start we’ve made; it gives us confidence,” the head coach said.
Sunday’s win at Elche was Barcelona’s first La Liga fixture of the 2026-27 season after their opening-matchday game was postponed. Their next domestic test is against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, a considerably stiffer read on whether a six-minute cameo is the sort of thing Gordon can stretch across 90.
