LeBron James is taking his growing interest in golf back to the city where his story began. His foundation has entered a partnership with the PGA Tour to stage a two-day event at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. The initiative will connect young people with players, mentors and career paths that are rarely visible from outside the sport.
A tournament with a wider purpose
According to the PGA Tour’s official announcement, the LeBron James Family Foundation Invitational will take place on July 6 and 7, 2027. The event will be held on Firestone’s South Course and involve students from the foundation’s I Promise programme. Its purpose is not limited to introducing them to the rules and techniques of golf.
The tournament will also feature players from the Pathway to Progression Pro-Bound Five, which creates places for college golfers on the Advocates Professional Golf Association circuit. The APGA was established in 2010 to expand opportunities for minority players, particularly Black golfers. Students will therefore meet athletes attempting to build professional careers in a sport where access has often depended on money, facilities and personal connections.
Firestone receives a new beginning
The event was described by Associated Press as a way of maintaining a PGA Tour presence at Firestone after the course’s 72-year association with tour events came to an end. Firestone has hosted two PGA Championships and the former World Series of Golf. It also staged a World Golf Championship that Tiger Woods won eight times.

That history gives the new event significance beyond James’ involvement. Firestone is losing the senior major that most recently kept it on the professional calendar, but the partnership offers the course a different role. Instead of focusing entirely on established stars, it will introduce a younger and more diverse group to the possibilities surrounding the game.
Golf becomes more than a hobby
James has developed a visible interest in golf and recently launched a YouTube channel centred on the sport. Its opening content followed a trip to Scotland with several former Cleveland Cavaliers teammates. The new partnership turns that personal interest into a structured project for his hometown.
The I Promise programme already supports students and families across Akron through education, mentoring and practical resources. Golf now becomes another route through which the foundation can create relationships and professional opportunities. For James, the sport is no longer simply a pastime but a new way of investing in the city that shaped him.
