Former England international Raheem Sterling, currently a free agent after leaving Dutch club Feyenoord, has been charged with three offences following a motorway collision in May. The 31-year-old faces a potential two-year prison sentence if convicted, according to The Sun.
Sterling is due to appear before magistrates in Basingstoke on September 15 to answer charges of dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, and failing to provide a specimen. The charges stem from a single-vehicle incident on May 28, 2026, involving his £270,000 Lamborghini.
The collision occurred on the M3 southbound, near the Minley Interchange in Hampshire. Police confirmed that the Lamborghini was spotted swerving across the motorway shortly before 9 am. Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported.
A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesman confirmed the charges, stating: “Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged for the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen.” The spokesman added that the charges “come following a single vehicle collision, involving a Lamborghini, on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange, on 28 May, 2026.”

A career in decline amid personal struggles
The news adds another difficult chapter to what has been a challenging period for Sterling, once considered one of European football’s most revered wingers. An 82-cap former England international, he enjoyed prolific spells with Liverpool and Manchester City, before moving to Chelsea and enduring a loan spell at Arsenal that failed to reignite his form.
His move to Feyenoord in the Eredivisie was intended to offer a fresh start, but he made just eight appearances for the Dutch club and failed to score before becoming a free agent. A source close to Sterling revealed the immense psychological toll of his recent career trajectory.
“He was a prolific international who steered the England squad to significant heights over the last decade and has been made to feel worthless. The psychological strain that has put on him is immeasurable. He feels isolated,” the source commented, highlighting the pressure and public scrutiny Sterling has faced.
The upcoming court appearance marks a serious legal challenge for Sterling, with the potential ramifications extending far beyond his professional football career.
