The agreement was reported on Thursday morning by David Ornstein of The Athletic, who wrote that Liverpool and PSG had reached an “agreement in principle” after weeks of talks that had refused to break either way. Personal terms with the player were already in place, and only the final paperwork remained to be ironed out.

The structure is £100m guaranteed with a further £20m in performance-related add-ons, according to Ornstein, on a long-term contract at Anfield. Barcola will travel for a medical once PSG sign off the last details.

Fabrizio Romano had spent the week telling his audience the announcement was days away. On Monday the Italian journalist said Liverpool and PSG were in “direct conversations” and that “at any moment could be the moment for the here we go“. By Thursday morning the two clubs had closed the gap.

Barcola frozen out at PSG

The France international has not played a minute of competitive football for Paris Saint-Germain this season. He was left out of the European champions’ opening three matches under Luis Enrique after he declined to extend his contract, which was down to its final two years.

PSG had initially valued him at £145m, and Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that a “positive” tone was emerging in the fresh round of talks between the clubs. The French side’s summer arrivals of Ferran Torres and Maghnes Akliouche had already left Barcola third-choice on his flank.

Arsenal had shown interest earlier in the window, but by the closing days only Liverpool remained in direct talks with PSG.

Iraola gets his winger

For Andoni Iraola, appointed head coach in June to replace Arne Slot, Barcola is the first major attacker brought in on his watch. The Spaniard’s high-press system at Bournemouth relied on quick, direct wide players who could carry the ball at pace and finish, and Barcola is being signed to fill that brief on the left.

The move sits on top of the biggest summer of spending in Liverpool’s history. Alexander Isak arrived on the final day of the 2025 window in a British-record £125m deal from Newcastle, and Florian Wirtz came in ahead of him from Bayer Leverkusen.

Barcola’s fee will not top the Isak figure, but at up to £120m it puts him alongside Wirtz and Isak in a front three that has been rebuilt in barely 12 months. Cody Gakpo’s future is now the question that follows: Romano flagged this week that “Barcola plus one in could mean Cody Gakpo out”.

The English transfer window closes on Tuesday, 1 September, and Ornstein reported that the medical is expected to be scheduled as soon as the remaining details are signed off on Thursday.
