The three citations, first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right side, and possessing open intoxicants in a vehicle, were filed on Thursday by the district attorney’s office, more than a month after Tony Romo’s traffic stop on Interstate 43.

A spokesperson told TMZ Sports that the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback is treating the case as closed on his end.

“Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved.”

The former quarterback did not address the case directly. His name has stayed off the CBS Sports schedule since late July.

What happened on Interstate 43

Romo was pulled over at around 6:15pm local time on 23 July while driving south on the high-rise bridge on I-43 in Milwaukee, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office. The department’s arrest detention report said he “was taken into custody after he performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests,” as FOX6 Milwaukee reported.

He was booked into the Milwaukee County Jail at around 9:45pm local time and released about an hour before midnight. His first court date is set for 21 September at 8:30am local time.

CBS placed Romo on leave

CBS Sports put Romo on leave on 31 July, saying in a short statement that “Tony Romo is on leave from his role at CBS Sports until further notice,” Awful Announcing reported. The network gave no timeline for his return.

J.J. Watt was moved into the lead booth alongside Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson for the duration of Romo’s absence. Watt joined CBS as a studio analyst after retiring in 2023 and had already stepped up to game analyst alongside Ian Eagle last season before being pulled onto the top team.
