Lando Norris has solidified his long-term future with McLaren, signing a new contract that will keep him with the Formula 1 team until at least the end of the 2030 season. The extension, announced on Saturday, underscores the 26-year-old’s deep loyalty to the outfit he joined for his Formula 1 debut in 2019.
Norris’s journey with McLaren has been one of significant highs and lows. After making his debut, the team endured several years of struggling for competitiveness. However, a major turnaround began following Andrea Stella’s promotion to team principal at the end of 2022, leading to a period of unprecedented success.
A journey of loyalty and triumph
The commitment from both sides paid dividends in recent seasons. McLaren ended a constructors’ championship drought that had lasted since 1998, securing consecutive titles in 2024 and 2025. Norris himself capped this resurgence by winning the drivers’ title in 2025, a testament to his perseverance and the team’s renewed form.
Reflecting on his decision, Norris emphasized the strong bond forged through shared challenges and triumphs. “There was some interest from elsewhere, but I don’t want to go anywhere. I don’t want to be with another team. I don’t want to spend time with other people. That’s why it really was probably one of the easiest decisions I’ve made since being in Formula 1,” Norris told BBC Sport.

He added, “The fact I stuck it through with them and then we went on to obviously have success certainly makes me feel like I don’t want to… they didn’t give up on me and I didn’t give up on them. That just creates a very strong bond between everyone that works here. I want to believe that bond stays as strong as it is now ’til I do retire in my career at Formula 1.”
Navigating the 2026 season
Despite the recent glory, the current 2026 season presented new challenges for McLaren. New F1 rules saw the team start off the pace. However, a significant car upgrade has once again turned their fortunes around, with Norris winning the past two Grands Prix in Hungary and the Netherlands. This recent surge has reignited his championship hopes, though he currently trails Mercedes’ championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 83 points with 11 races remaining.
Team Principal Andrea Stella lauded Norris’s impact and character. “Lando is an exceptional driver, who combines outstanding natural speed with maturity, consistency and a strong commitment to McLaren but, above all, he is a special human being who is valued by everyone in the team,” Stella said. “Since joining McLaren as part of our junior programme, he has grown with us and played a central role in bringing the team back to the front of Formula 1.”
The extended deal, which was signed despite Norris having more than a year left on his previous contract, ensures stability for McLaren alongside his teammate Oscar Piastri. It firmly positions Norris as a cornerstone of the team’s long-term ambitions in Formula 1.
