Real Madrid intend to open renewal talks with Thibaut Courtois in the coming weeks. According to Madrid Universal, the proposal on the table would be a one-year extension, in line with the club’s policy of handing players over the age of 30 short contracts rather than long ones.
Nothing has been signed. Neither the club nor the goalkeeper has confirmed any negotiations publicly, and the reporting frames the meeting as an intention rather than something already under way.
The 34-year-old Belgian’s 2-1 Champions League win over Inter Milan on 8 September has been cited as the catalyst. Courtois was busy at the Santiago Bernabeu, keeping out efforts from Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez in the opening exchanges before Real Madrid found their two-goal cushion.
Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 14th minute after a slip by Yann Bisseck, and Federico Valverde added a second nine minutes later when Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez hesitated on a back pass. Carlos Augusto reduced the deficit late in the second half, but Inter could not force an equaliser.

Contract expires in 2027
Head coach José Mourinho, who returned to Real Madrid on a three-year deal announced on 11 June 2026, has kept Courtois as his first-choice goalkeeper since taking over.
Courtois’s current contract runs until 30 June 2027. A one-year extension would carry him through to the summer of 2028.
Courtois: ‘I’m quite relaxed about it’
Speaking in June, before Mourinho’s return was made official, Courtois told Belgian media he had no issue with the club’s approach to older players.
“At Real Madrid, the policy is that, once you turn thirty, your contract is renewed on a year-by-year basis. So I’m quite relaxed about it,” he said, in comments carried by Yahoo Sports.

“For me, the ideal scenario would be to finish my career in Madrid.”
Those remarks predated any formal talks. Madrid Universal’s reporting is that the first meeting between the club and Courtois’s camp is only expected in the coming weeks.
