Inside the American Airlines Center in Dallas on Wednesday night, House Speaker Mike Johnson told the room the arena was full. The wide shots on the live cameras kept showing something else.
When Donald Trump reached the stage after 9pm local time, he took his own read of the room.
“This place is packed. And not only is this packed, it’s a big arena, not only is this packed, but you have an equal number of people standing outside,” he said.
He then pre-empted the photographers.

“They’ll take a picture of his seat while he’s gone. And they’ll say, ‘Trump did not fill up the arena.'”
Newsweek’s Alex Rouhandeh, working the American Airlines Center floor around 8pm local time, saw a lower bowl that was packed and upper and middle sections that were mostly empty. By the time Trump reached the podium, Rouhandeh estimated the venue was 65 to 70 percent full. PBS White House correspondent Liz Landers and columnist Dana Milbank posted their own footage of a sparsely filled upper deck.
Trump’s morning post on Truth Social
The claim that reached Trump’s biggest audience came the next morning on Truth Social.
“The Republican Midterm Convention last night, in Dallas, was a major, sold out hit, far bigger, better, and more important than anyone thought possible,” Trump wrote.

“The overall numbers beat the NFL… I guess people LOVE TRUMP POLITICS!”
Trump did not attach a single number to the boast, and did not spell out whether he meant television ratings, streaming, social media reach, or a combination of the three. The convention aired on Fox News, The Blaze and multiple livestreams, and no audience figures for either the convention or the NFL game had been released by Thursday morning.
Seahawks 13, Patriots 10
Wednesday’s opener on NBC was the league’s 2026 Kickoff Game and a Super Bowl LX rematch between the New England Patriots and the reigning champion Seattle Seahawks. Drew Lock led two late scoring drives and Josh Jobe sealed a 13-10 Seahawks win with an end-zone interception on the final drive. The game was carried nationally across NBC, Peacock, Telemundo and Universo, with last year’s league opener drawing about 28 million viewers.
Trump’s NFL feud since 2017
Trump has been at war with the NFL since 2017, when he attacked players who knelt during the national anthem and pushed owners to fire them.
