His pointed remarks, suggesting the prize should honour the “best player in the world, full stop” rather than simply the highest goal-scorer, have drawn a measured response from one of his fellow contenders, Harry Kane.
Speaking to Movistar Plus, as reported by Goal, Yamal laid out his philosophy for the prestigious individual accolade. “I think the Ballon d’Or should go to the best player in the world, full stop. Not to a player who has scored 80 goals, because if you score 80 goals, you get the top scorer award for that. Those are two completely different things that people do not understand,” Yamal stated, in comments widely interpreted as a subtle jab at prolific strikers.
Yamal certainly has a strong case for overall impact. Last term, he was a pivotal figure for Barcelona, who secured the La Liga title, contributing an impressive 24 goals and 18 assists. He also played a significant role in his national team’s World Cup triumph, adding one goal and one assist during the tournament.
Kane’s diplomatic reply
When quizzed about Yamal’s comments, Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane adopted a more diplomatic stance, preferring to let his performances do the talking. “I don’t want to talk too much about myself. I speak on the pitch. Everyone is different. Lamine Yamal has had a great season, and so has Michael Olise. The Ballon d’Or is not in my control,” Kane told reporters, as reported by Goal.

The England captain reiterated his focus on his own game. “Everyone has the right to express their opinion in the way they want. This does not depend on me. As for me, I am enjoying everything that is happening a great deal. I will simply wait to see what happens. I will carry on doing my job on the pitch, and then we will see how things turn out,” he concluded.
A crowded field of contenders
Kane’s own season has been nothing short of spectacular, particularly in terms of goal-scoring. Last season, he netted a remarkable 61 goals for Bayern Munich, playing a crucial role in their Bundesliga-winning campaign.
