Nine months after tearing his left ACL, Patrick Mahomes moved past a familiar milestone on Sunday night in Indianapolis. His 32-of-47, 382-yard, three-touchdown performance pushed Kansas City past the Colts 33-30 in overtime and took his career win total as a starter to 97, tying Tom Brady for the third most in a quarterback’s first 10 NFL seasons since 1950.
Only Peyton Manning (105) and Russell Wilson (104) sit above the pair on that list.
Nine months back from surgery
Mahomes tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee on December 14, 2025, planting his left leg late in a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Reconstructive surgery was performed the following day in Dallas by Dr. Dan Cooper.
He targeted the 2026 opener as his return date and made it, but looked short of his sharpness in the Week 1 win over Denver. Sunday night was his first vintage outing back.

Overtime turn and a controversial reversal
Travis Kelce caught nine passes for 101 yards and a touchdown, while Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals also caught scoring passes. Mahomes was 14-of-17 for 137 yards on play-action, a career high in completions on those throws.
The overtime turned on a play the Chiefs briefly thought had ended it. Colts receiver Laquon Treadwell hauled in a deep ball, was hit, and lost possession; Kansas City recovered. Officials ruled Treadwell down by contact before the ball came loose, and after replay upheld the call, Indianapolis kicker Spencer Shrader tied the game with a 38-yard field goal.
Mahomes wasn’t upset.
“We had the big play in overtime where we think we stripped the ball, and then he ended up being barely touched. I was actually kind of glad, because I didn’t want to see Twitter’s reaction if they would’ve called it a fumble. So, we got to prove it the right way, get the stop there, and then go back out there and get a field goal,” he said afterward.

8-0 in regular-season overtime
Kansas City drove back into range with Kenneth Walker III carrying three times in a row and catching a 22-yard pass, before Harrison Butker settled it with a 40-yard field goal as time expired.
The result took Mahomes to 8-0 in regular-season overtime and gave the Chiefs their eighth straight regular-season overtime win, matching the San Francisco 49ers’ streak from 2003 to 2010.
Kansas City is 2-0. Mahomes’ next start is at Miami on September 27.
