A light-hearted apology on air
Jamie Carragher interrupted his own praise of Jeremy Jacquet during Liverpool’s 1-0 Premier League victory at Bournemouth, offering Sky Sports viewers a playful apology for his enthusiasm.
“Am I getting carried away? I apologise to viewers at home… I’ve been really impressed,” Carragher said during the broadcast, as quoted by SPORTbible.
It was not a retraction or an admission that he had said anything inappropriate. The former Liverpool defender was acknowledging that his admiration for the 21-year-old might have sounded excessive so early in the player’s Premier League career.
Carragher nevertheless stood by the substance of his assessment. He described Jacquet as a convincing centre-back while recognising that mistakes will inevitably be part of his development.

Jacquet stands out in narrow Liverpool win
Jacquet partnered Virgil van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s defence and helped Andoni Iraola’s side record a third consecutive Premier League clean sheet. Liverpool supporters later voted the Frenchman their Player of the Match.
Bournemouth created problems during a difficult opening period for the visitors. Alisson made a vital first-half save from Evanilson, while Liverpool struggled to match the home side’s intensity.
The decisive moment arrived shortly before the hour mark. Cody Gakpo advanced down the right, beat two defenders and delivered into the penalty area. After Florian Wirtz became involved in the move, the ball fell to Alexander Isak, who finished from close range.
Liverpool’s official match report confirmed the 1-0 result at Vitality Stadium. It was Isak’s fourth Premier League goal in five appearances, rather than his third of the campaign as stated in the original SPORTbible report.

Liverpool’s early faith in Jacquet
Liverpool completed Jacquet’s move from Stade Rennais on July 1 after agreeing the transfer earlier in 2026. The club did not disclose a fee in its official announcement, so reported valuations should not be treated as confirmed.
Jacquet arrived with 33 senior appearances for Rennes and a further 24 from a loan spell at Clermont Foot. A shoulder injury had ended his 2025-26 season prematurely, but Iraola said in July that the defender had recovered fully.
“Still being young, I think he has all the tools that we will need for that position,” the Liverpool head coach said in an interview published by the club.
The Bournemouth performance strengthened the impression that Jacquet is ready to contribute immediately. Van Dijk has urged observers to remain calm, but five consecutive league starts and a supporters’ award represent an encouraging beginning.
