Eberl’s endorsement is unusually blunt for a Bayern executive.

“For me, there is no other candidate than Harry,” he told Sport Bild, adding that Kane “has broken records and is an outstanding personality” and that he had “witnessed first-hand how Harry has performed and conducted himself over the past two years.”

On 19 September, Kane became the fastest player in history to 100 Bundesliga goals, reaching the mark in his 98th appearance and beating Dieter Müller’s benchmark of 129 games set with Cologne in the 1970s. He converted a penalty to bring up the century and then added a second in a 7-0 win over Union Berlin.

The record follows a season in which Kane recorded 68 goals and assists across 51 appearances for Bayern.

Bayern close on a new contract

The milestone has landed in the same week Bayern’s leadership has publicly pushed for Kane, 33, to stay beyond the summer. His current deal runs to the end of the season.

“We’re in good talks. We’re fairly close. There’s still some things that we need to iron out,” Kane told The Independent.

“I think it won’t be too long before there’s some sort of announcement.”

Bayern president Herbert Hainer used a club visit to Oktoberfest to endorse that direction of travel.

“We want to extend with him and I also think that’s what will happen,” Hainer said.

Earlier in September, Eberl had been equally relaxed about the timing.

“Both sides want it, and then it should work out,” Eberl told reporters.

Chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen has taken a similar line.

“The chemistry is perfect, so we’re completely relaxed about the matter. Whether it happens one day earlier or one day later is irrelevant,” Dreesen said before the season started.

Dreesen has signalled a resolution could come after the current three-week international break, with the choice between a deal to 2029 or 2030 still under discussion.

London hosts the 70th Ballon d’Or

The Ballon d’Or is scheduled for Monday 26 October at the London Palladium, the first time the ceremony has been held in the English capital and the 70th edition of the award. Organisers France Football and UEFA chose the venue as a tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the inaugural winner in 1956.

After the Union Berlin win, Eberl was asked about the campaigning that shapes the vote.

“There has to be campaigning, of course. The best players are the ones who don’t need a campaign,” he said.
