Isak has been released from Sweden’s Nations League camp and sent back to Merseyside with a thigh problem. He will miss the home game against Poland on Monday, the away game at Bosnia and Herzegovina on 2 October and the return fixture with Romania on 5 October.

Sweden head coach Graham Potter walked through how the injury emerged after the final whistle in Solna.

“He’s got a small problem with his thigh. It’s not a big one, but because of the amount of games we’ve got in a small space of time, he won’t be able to make those,” Potter told reporters.

“It was during the game. Like anything, you sometimes get bumps and bruises in the game, you might think it’s a bit of a dead leg or something. But actually as the 24 hours, 48 hours after the game, not quite what you think.”

Isak had opened the scoring in the 20th minute, peeling off Virgil Ghita to meet a Yasin Ayari through ball and finishing past Ionut Radu at his near post. Viktor Gyokeres added a second on 38 minutes before Dennis Man pulled one back for Romania.

Liverpool’s own statement leaned on the word “minor”. The club said Isak “will now be assessed by club medical staff at the AXA Training Centre” and framed the withdrawal as precautionary rather than diagnostic.

Iraola’s two-week window

Two weeks separate Isak from Liverpool’s next Premier League match, at home to Manchester City on 11 October. Head coach Andoni Iraola, appointed in June to succeed Arne Slot, has few like-for-like alternatives up front, and the Sweden international has done most of the heavy lifting so far this season.

Isak’s four Premier League goals in five appearances have him second in the Golden Boot standings behind Erling Haaland.

Potter added:

“Unfortunately after getting it checked out, it’s a little bit more than what you think during the match. He has to miss the rest of the camp,” he said.

Isak’s next scheduled appointment is at the AXA Training Centre for scans. Liverpool’s next scheduled kick-off is Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday 11 October.
