Angelos Charisteas knows what a Greek upset looks like. The former striker scored the winning goal against Portugal in the Euro 2004 final. Now, after Greece beat Germany on German soil, he has turned his attention to the rematch.

“Everyone is waiting in Thessaloniki!” is the warning attributed to Charisteas in BILD’s report. The former Werder Bremen forward is looking ahead to Germany’s trip to Greece on October 4, when the sides meet again in the Nations League.

A warning backed by a win

The message carries more weight after Sunday’s result. Germany lost 1-0 to Greece in Augsburg on September 27, with Dimitrios Kourbelis scoring a deflected winner in the 74th minute. It was Jürgen Klopp’s first home match as Germany coach. His team had drawn 1-1 with the Netherlands three days earlier and is still looking for its first victory under him.

Charisteas had already backed Greece to surprise Germany before the Augsburg game. “I think our national team is now ready to take the next step,” he said in remarks reported on September 26. Greece then delivered the result that made his warning about the return fixture harder to dismiss.

His standing in Greek soccer comes from one of the country’s defining sporting moments: his goal secured a 1-0 victory over host Portugal in the Euro 2004 final.

Germany has one match before Thessaloniki

Klopp acknowledged that Germany struggled against Greece’s deep defense. “I could have lived with not winning the game, but you cannot lose it,” he said after the defeat. He also accepted responsibility for the changes to his lineup.

Germany hosts Serbia in Munich on October 1 before travelling to Thessaloniki for the October 4 rematch. Charisteas’ words give that second meeting an added edge: Germany will arrive knowing Greece has already shown it can beat them.
