Jeremy Corbyn’s Arsenal credentials predate his political career, and this week he brought them into the biggest disciplinary case in Premier League history.

The former Labour leader, MP for Islington North, laid out a triple punishment for Manchester City after UK outlets reported the club had been found guilty on 114 of 115 charges of breaching Premier League financial rules.

“This is a seismic judgement which demands seismic consequences,” Corbyn told the Evening Standard.

“That includes a significant points deduction that results in their inevitable relegation. There should also be a substantial fine, the proceeds of which should all go to grassroots football.”

Then he turned to City’s trophy cabinet.

“The league should also seriously consider stripping them of their titles. If their titles weren’t won fairly, why should they keep them?”

The Arsenal angle Corbyn does not hide

The intervention lands with extra weight because of Corbyn’s own club. Arsenal ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title in May under Mikel Arteta, their first English championship since the 2003-04 season, after three consecutive runner-up finishes.

The charges cover an even longer stretch. The alleged breaches span the 2009-10 to 2022-23 seasons, during which City won eight Premier League titles, four FA Cups, seven League Cups and the 2023 Champions League.

Corbyn returned to that point directly.

“Remember, underneath these breaches are countless trophies and titles that other clubs and fans should have celebrated.”

City to appeal, Premier League still silent

City deny wrongdoing and are expected to appeal. Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak told supporters in a letter on the club’s website that “the Premier League process still has a long way to run, and our confidence and intent in proving the Club’s innocence is just as strong as when this began.”

The Premier League itself has yet to confirm the verdict publicly. Reports on Monday noted that no sanctions had been announced and the league had maintained public silence, with any punishment expected only after the independent commission holds a separate sanctions hearing. City have 14 days to lodge an appeal once the ruling is made formal.

Corbyn ended with the Premier League itself in his sights.

“Greed and selfishness in the Premier League is out of control.”
