There is a Paula Abdul song Corinna Schumacher can no longer hear in her car without crying. She said as much on camera in a new Netflix documentary about Michael Schumacher’s 1994 title season.

“That was our song back then,” she says of Rush Rush.

“When I hear it today and I’m in the car, I cry to myself.”

Corinna Schumacher rarely lets the public in. Her husband has not been seen publicly since a skiing accident in the French Alps in December 2013, and the family has held that line for more than a decade. The song admission is a rare on-camera moment from her.

A season with a first title and Imola

The film is Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend, directed by Christin Freitag and produced by LEONINE Documentaries. Netflix releases it globally on 2 October.

It is a German-language feature built tightly around Michael Schumacher’s 1994 campaign at Benetton, the year he took his first drivers’ title at the age of 25. That season was also one of the darkest in the sport’s history, with Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger both killed on the same Imola race weekend.

The film follows the family-approved 2021 Netflix documentary Schumacher, and was made with the involvement of people close to him.

The fan mail from a girl called Jutta

Corinna’s contributions go beyond the song. She recalls the volume of fan mail Michael received in 1994, including from one particular admirer whose name became a running joke between them.

“Her name was Jutta,” she says of a girl who kept posting underwear to the driver. “At some point, ‘Come on, Jutta,’ became his standard phrase.”

She also puts on record how she experienced that title-winning season alongside him.

“My heart beats for him when he wins. And when he loses. My heart is always there.”

Michael Schumacher’s medical condition since the 2013 accident is not the film’s subject; Corinna’s on-camera memories are about 1994, not about now. Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend is released on Netflix worldwide on Friday 2 October.
