Kylian Mbappé hyperextended his left knee on France duty last Friday, and Real Madrid’s medical department could offer only that his condition was “awaiting evolution” when it issued its report the following day. Diario AS puts the layoff at 10 to 12 days, which would still get the France captain back for the Villarreal fixture on 10 October.
The problem is what surrounds him.
Rodrygo is out until at least the spring after rupturing his ACL and lateral meniscus. Éder Militão is nursing a hamstring problem. Ferland Mendy is working through a torn rectus femoris tendon that could keep him out for months. Federico Valverde has been out with a knock. Ibrahima Konaté, signed on a free from Liverpool in June, went off with a knee injury on the same international break that ended Mbappé’s month.
Even the calendar is repeating itself. Real Madrid logged 54 injuries last season, one of the higher counts in European football, and their September numbers this year are tracking the same curve. That is the pattern José Mourinho, three months into his return to the club, has already tried to break.

The invisible signing from Benfica
Sandro Carriço arrived in July from Benfica LAB, where he had spent 13 years turning training-load data into injury-prevention protocols. His job at Real Madrid is narrow: measure fatigue, spot the risk signals before they become a soft-tissue tear, and adjust individual training loads. He was, as the Spanish sports press put it, Mourinho’s personal request.
Two months in, the ledger is not moving. The injuries so far this season skew towards exactly the profile Carriço was hired to influence, hamstrings, tendons and knee capsules, the kind most closely tied to workload and recovery rather than contact.
Hamstrings, tendons, knee capsules
Fixture congestion is the obvious accelerant. Several first-team players had short breaks before pre-season, and the September international window pulled the squad in every direction, from Nations League fixtures in Europe to qualifying duty across South America.
The recurrence of the same profile of injury across defenders and forwards points to something more structural than a run of bad luck. It is the reason the sports scientist was brought in, and the reason he now has a very short runway to show the hire has worked.

Mbappé and Konaté targeting the Clásico
Real Madrid host Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu on 10 October. Barcelona then host the Clásico at Camp Nou on 25 October. Mbappé is expected back for Villarreal, Konaté in time for the trip to Catalonia. Rodrygo and Mendy will not be part of either fixture.
