Rob Phillips had just filed his post-match interview with Cardiff City head coach Brian Barry-Murphy when the pain started. The BBC Wales football commentator had been calling Cardiff’s 1-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, 12 September 2026, and had returned to his seat in the press box at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Sitting next to him was Nathan Blake, the former Cardiff striker who works as his match-day co-commentator. Blake noticed the colour had drained from Phillips’s face.

“When I got back to the press box to send the interview over, I had severe chest pains,” Phillips told BBC Radio Wales.

Phillips initially told Blake he would drive home. Blake refused. “Look, Rob, you’ve lost all your colour. You’re not going anywhere. I’m not going in a car with you on the M6 in that state,” Blake told him.

Blake reached out to his former Bolton team-mate John McGinlay, now a club ambassador, who arranged for club doctor David Humphreys to see Phillips in the medical room. Phillips was told he could be having a heart attack.

Within about an hour, Phillips was on an operating table at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester. Doctors ran a pipe up his arm and unblocked the artery with a balloon.

“I call him my bro”

Speaking later on the podcast the pair present together, Rob and Blakey’s Commentary Box, Phillips pointed straight at his co-commentator.

“I call him my bro and without him I might not even be here.”

Blake’s answer was short.

“That’s what friends are for.”

Phillips also thanked Bolton Wanderers, McGinlay, Humphreys, the paramedics who drove him to hospital under blue light, and the Wythenshawe Hospital staff.

Bolton’s late winner, then the press box

The Championship fixture Phillips had been calling was decided by a 90th-minute header from substitute Thierry Gale, ending a run of four straight defeats for the home side. Bolton keeper Gavin Bazunu’s save tally reached double figures in the win, prompting head coach Steven Schumacher to say: “You need goalkeepers who win you points and today he has done that.”

Phillips had gone pitchside after the final whistle to record Barry-Murphy’s reaction, then walked back up to file the interview. It was in those minutes at his commentary position that the chest pains hit.

Phillips has since revealed the incident publicly and continues to co-present Rob and Blakey’s Commentary Box with Blake.
