Fernando Alonso will race on into a 24th Formula 1 season. The 45-year-old Spaniard, who first lined up on a grid in 2001, has signed a new long-term deal with Aston Martin Aramco that extends his career well beyond 2027.

The team confirmed the extension on Tuesday from its Silverstone base, and in the same statement said Lance Stroll had also agreed a new long-term contract. 2027 will be their fifth consecutive season as team-mates.

“I’m very happy to sign a new contract with the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team,” Alonso said.

“I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level.”

“I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed.”

A bet on experience over youth

The decision keeps Formula 1’s most experienced driver pairing intact. Alonso and Stroll have 644 Grand Prix starts between them, more than any other combination on the current grid.

That continuity is being doubled down on at a difficult moment. After 15 rounds of 2026, Aston Martin sits 10th in the constructors’ standings with three points, all of them scored by Alonso, with only new entrant Cadillac behind the team.

Executive chairman Lawrence Stroll framed the extensions as a long-game call.

“Lance and Fernando have been a crucial part of our journey and we are very pleased to confirm that they will continue with us into the next chapter for the team,” he said.

The team has invested heavily to try to climb back to the front: a works engine partnership with Honda for the sport’s new technical rules this season, and the recruitment of design veteran Adrian Newey to lead the car concept. The 2026 campaign has been painful, but the squad believes the full picture of the project will take longer than one season to show.

Stroll’s 11th F1 season

For Lance Stroll, the extension takes him into his 11th Formula 1 campaign. The Canadian has made more than 200 starts since his debut with Williams in 2017 and has three podium finishes to his name. He has been part of the team since 2019, before it was rebranded Aston Martin.

“I’m very happy to continue with Aston Martin Aramco for the long term,” Stroll said.

“I’ve been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team.”

Alonso’s own ledger at Aston Martin runs to 85 Grands Prix since 2023, with eight podium finishes.

The 2026 championship resumes with the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, 11 October.
