Jurgen Klopp has quietly declined the part many Liverpool supporters would most want him to play. Speaking at a Germany press conference on Wednesday, the former Liverpool manager said he had barely engaged with English football’s biggest financial ruling in a generation.

“Of course I’ve heard about that, but I haven’t given it much thought. I can only wait and see.”

Klopp took the Germany job in July and began work in August, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann after the national team’s 2026 World Cup exit. His short-term focus is a Nations League fixture against Serbia.

On Tuesday the Premier League confirmed that an independent commission had upheld 114 of the 115 charges first brought in February 2023, covering nine seasons of alleged financial breaches between 2009 and 2018.

The two one-point title races

Klopp’s Liverpool finished a single point behind Manchester City in 2018/19 (97 points) and again in 2021/22 (92 points). The 2019/20 league trophy he lifted at Anfield remains the only Premier League title of his nine-year spell.

“If any sanctions are handed out, I have nothing to do with it; I’ll wait and see. I’m far from preparing for a title or anything like that. I’m absolutely fine with what we’ve achieved in Liverpool. We fought hard on the pitch. I can’t say more about that because I don’t know the details and I’m not interested in them.”

“I have big respect for Pep Guardiola and City’s style of football; they played fantastic football and were a top-class opponent for us.”

A parade already in the garden

Asked earlier in the year what he would do if Liverpool were handed a retrospective Premier League trophy, Klopp joked about staging “our own parade in my garden” if the weather held.

Manchester City have called the verdict “disappointing and surprising” and maintain their innocence. The commission can impose anything from a fine to a heavy points deduction, with relegation or expulsion from the Premier League at the extreme end of the scale, and the Premier League has no fixed tariff for a case of this size. City have until Friday, 2 October to lodge their appeal; a separate hearing on punishment has not been scheduled.
