Rui Pinto is back in the spotlight following Manchester City’s financial verdict, this time because of a dramatic allegation about his safety.

A post from the X account Legion HQ claims the Football Leaks whistleblower escaped an assassination attempt unharmed in a bulletproof SUV. However, the post provides no named source or verifiable details establishing that the incident happened.

International Business Times UK has also examined the allegation and reports that no police statement or authoritative confirmation has emerged.

Earlier assault does not confirm the claim

Pinto reportedly suffered an assault in Lisbon in April. That earlier incident does not establish that he subsequently survived an assassination attempt, nor has a connection to Manchester City been established.

The allegation is circulating amid renewed scrutiny of his security arrangements. According to The Guardian, Portuguese authorities have decided to withdraw his protected-witness status.

Pinto’s connection to City stems from confidential material obtained through Football Leaks. Documents concerning the club’s finances contributed to investigations by UEFA and the Premier League.

That history explains his prominence in the discussion surrounding the club. It does not substantiate the allegation in the social-media post.

City’s financial case continues

In a statement published on September 29, the Premier League announced that an independent commission had found City guilty of serious financial-rule breaches across nine seasons, alongside most charges relating to a failure to cooperate.

The commission found that the club had used arrangements to inflate revenues and reduce reported costs between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons.

City dispute the findings. The club has until October 2 to exercise its right to appeal, while any sanctions will be considered at a separate hearing.

Those proceedings are documented. The claim that Pinto escaped an assassination attempt in a bulletproof vehicle remains unverified.
