John Fury is not amused that his son’s former head coach is now preparing the man standing opposite him on fight night.

“When people will sell their soul for a fiver … they will do, won’t they? It’s about the money. Tyson gave him the biggest leg up in the world and what’s he done now? Traitored him. This is what you’re dealing with, horrible,” John Fury told Playbook Boxing.

“I told them about Ben Davison back in the day. I told them: These people are not your friends; they’re looking to get a leg up.”

The partnership ended at the end of 2019

Ben Davison was Tyson Fury’s head coach for a run of five fights, including the first meeting with Deontay Wilder in December 2018. The partnership ended in December 2019, with SugarHill Steward taking over the corner for the Wilder rematch and everything that followed.

Anthony Joshua brought Davison back earlier this month, swapping the trainers from Oleksandr Usyk’s camp who worked his last two outings for a coach who knows Fury’s habits from the inside.

Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, called Davison “a great trainer” and said he had been “always working with Ben Davison behind the scenes” even through Joshua’s most recent fights.

Hearn was blunter about the plan for fight night.

“Land one straight on his chin and knock him spark out.”

Tyson plays it for laughs

Tyson Fury himself called Davison a “dirty traitor” to his face during fight build-up, delivered as a joke.

Johnny Nelson, the Sky Sports analyst and former cruiserweight world champion, saw the hiring as a straight professional call.

“I’m just surprised, but this is his choice,” he said.

Fury and Joshua meet at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Friday 11 December, with the WBA ‘super’ heavyweight title on the line and Netflix carrying the fight globally. Turki Alalshikh, the Saudi general entertainment chairman who finally brokered the bout after a decade and a half of near-misses, put it this way when the deal was announced.
