For most of the year, Morten Hjulmand was described as a Premier League midfielder in waiting. He ended the summer at Atletico Madrid.
Atletico announced the signing of the Sporting CP captain on 9 July 2026. The 27-year-old Danish defensive midfielder signed a five-year contract that runs until 30 June 2031. The fee was reported at €40m fixed, with up to €5m more in add-ons, a sharp discount on the €80m release clause in his Sporting contract.
Three Premier League giants were left watching. Manchester United had tracked Hjulmand across multiple transfer windows, Arsenal joined the race in the spring, and Manchester City also made contact before Atletico moved decisively in June.
‘For me, it was an easy decision’
At his presentation in Madrid, Hjulmand said the choice came down to the club’s standing and the manager who called him.

“For me, it was an easy decision,” he told reporters.
“I’ve already sensed his passion and conviction for next season. And that was over the phone; I think it will be even easier in person.”
He also framed the move as a direct ticket to silverware.
“I’m here to win trophies, as many as I can. Whether it happens or not, we’re going to give it our all.”

From Copenhagen to Lisbon to the Metropolitano
Hjulmand’s path to Atletico has been linear more than glamorous. He left FC Copenhagen’s academy for Admira Wacker, moved on to Lecce in Italy, and joined Sporting in August 2023. In three seasons in Lisbon he made 141 appearances, scored 10 goals, provided 12 assists and lifted two Portuguese league titles plus the domestic cup while wearing the captain’s armband.
The physical profile is why Simeone wanted him. At 1.85m, Hjulmand is a ball-winning holding midfielder built for pressing, duels and tidy distribution rather than final-third damage. He has 30 caps for Denmark and made his senior international debut in September 2023.
Already a fixture under Simeone
Hjulmand did not need long to settle. He made his competitive debut on matchday one of the 2026-27 La Liga season against Malaga and, by the start of October, had featured in seven league games and one Champions League match for Atletico. The Dane, signed alongside left back Alejandro Grimaldo in the summer, has moved straight into the starting midfield.
