Russian sports minister Mikhail Degtyarev has marked Vladimir Putin’s 74th birthday with a message portraying the president as both a major supporter of the country’s sporting system and a personal example for athletes.

Degtyarev, who also chairs the Russian Olympic Committee, published the message on Wednesday as Putin celebrated his birthday on October 7.

Writing in a post on his official Telegram channel, Degtyarev said he was passing on congratulations from Russia’s wider sporting community, including athletes, coaches, specialists and supporters.

“We thank you, Vladimir Vladimirovich, for your special attention to the sports sector and the constant support,” Degtyarev wrote, translated from Russian.

Putin’s sporting background highlighted

Degtyarev went further than simply thanking the Russian president for government support.

He specifically highlighted Putin’s personal relationship with sport, describing him as a master of sport and a promoter of martial arts who, in Degtyarev’s words, demonstrates the benefits of an active lifestyle through his own example.

That part of the message reflects an image Putin has cultivated for decades. The Russian president has a long association with judo and sambo and is widely known for his participation in martial arts. A recent biographical profile from CNN also notes his judo background and black belt. Putin was born on October 7, 1952, making Wednesday his 74th birthday.

Degtyarev’s position gives the comments additional weight. He has served as Russia’s minister of sport since May 2024 and currently combines that position with the chairmanship of the Russian Olympic Committee. Russia’s Ministry of Sport confirms that he was appointed to the ministerial role by Putin.

Sport has become part of a wider political message

The birthday tribute also comes at a significant time for Russian sport.

Degtyarev has repeatedly linked Putin personally to Russia’s attempts to restore its position within international sporting structures. Earlier in 2026, he argued that Putin’s standing within martial arts had helped Russia in negotiations surrounding the return of Russian competitors to international judo and sambo events.

The latest message therefore fits into a broader theme increasingly used by Russian sporting officials: presenting progress on the international stage not only as the result of sporting diplomacy, but also as a consequence of Putin’s personal influence.

There was no major policy announcement attached to Wednesday’s birthday message. Instead, Degtyarev used the occasion to stress the president’s role within Russia’s sporting identity, particularly among younger athletes.

He ended the message by wishing Putin faith, hope and love, while portraying the president’s involvement in sport as an example for the next generation.
