The clip is from the autumn of 2011, when defender Ricardo Carvalho left the Portugal squad before a Euro 2012 qualifier against Cyprus after being dropped by then-coach Paulo Bento. A 26-year-old Ronaldo backed the manager without reservation.
“Nobody has a guaranteed place in the national team,” Ronaldo said at the time. “Whoever is playing best and whoever the coach chooses will play.”
He added, of his then-Real Madrid teammate: “He made a mistake, but we all make mistakes.”
Fifteen years on, Ronaldo has done the same thing, as GiveMeSport highlighted this week after the old interview was shared again on social media.

The row with Jorge Jesus
The 41-year-old Al-Nassr forward left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen on the eve of a Nations League match against Denmark, having been an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over Norway that preceded it.
In a lengthy statement to his Instagram followers, reported by Sky Sports, Ronaldo accused Jesus of breaking a private agreement over his minutes against Norway.
“I warmed up from half-time onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn’t called on,” Ronaldo wrote. “The coach had broken his word to me.”
Jesus, who worked with Ronaldo at Al-Nassr before taking the Portugal job, has rejected the claim and said his conscience is clear.

“I will explain everything after the last game,” Jesus told reporters. “I have many years in soccer and I know that I did nothing that should have caused things to go differently. I will not hide or run away from it.”
‘I shouldn’t have done it’
Ronaldo did offer a partial admission. Alongside the broken-promise allegation, he apologized to the squad for the departure itself, in comments carried by Pulse Sports.
“I owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp. I shouldn’t have done it. The responsibility is mine alone.”
He also apologized to supporters who had traveled, saying he was sorry to “the Portuguese who supported us intensely there,” and asked the Portuguese Football Federation to impose whatever sanction it deems appropriate without leniency.

He stopped short of walking away from international football, saying that if he is “physically well” and after any suspension is served, he will be available “to compete and win for our national team.”
According to sources quoted by ESPN, Ronaldo has told associates he will not return to the squad while Jesus is in charge.
