Vinicius Junior named almost everyone on his side of the pitch in his Instagram post on Saturday night. He thanked his teammates, his coach and the supporters at the Santiago Bernabeu. He did not mention Nathan Saliba, the Villarreal defender he had just been sent off for grabbing by the hair.
The red card in the 73rd minute reduced Real Madrid to ten men, and they held on to win 1-0, according to the match report carried by Al Jazeera. The incident unfolded in the build-up to what Vinicius thought was Real Madrid’s second goal, with VAR calling the referee over to review the preceding seconds and spotting Vinicius pulling the back of Saliba’s head.
“The joy continues… Sorry to my team”
Vinicius had come off the bench in the 52nd minute and briefly thought he had scored Madrid’s second. Instead VAR took the referee back through the move, erased the goal and recommended a straight red for violent conduct.
His Instagram message afterward was short.

“The joy continues… Sorry to my team and the fans,” he wrote, in a post cited by bein Sports.
The absence of any reference to Saliba is the detail several Spanish outlets picked up on, because Spanish Football Federation guidelines on violent conduct away from the ball are strict and the referee’s report has sharpened the exposure.
A referee’s report that reads badly
Referee Isidro Diaz de Mera wrote that Vinicius continued to protest loudly and approached him in what the official described as an aggressive manner, with teammates stepping in to pull him away. The referee noted he could not identify specific words.
A report of that tone, under Article 103.2 for violent conduct, typically carries a two- or three-match sanction and in some readings as many as four. Any ban of at least two league fixtures would carry across the games with Sevilla on October 18 and Barcelona on October 25, per bein Sports.

The Barcelona game is El Clasico, scheduled for Camp Nou.
Mourinho skipped the podium
Jose Mourinho was booked on the touchline and did not appear at the mandatory post-match press conference. Skipping the podium carries its own risk of a federation fine, but it also kept Mourinho from any on-camera remark about the officiating that could have earned a bench ban of his own in the weeks before Camp Nou.
Vinicius was less restrained on his own account later in the evening, sharing a montage of heavy tackles he had absorbed in earlier fixtures with the caption, in his own words, “And the one who always gets the yellow and red card is Vinicius… what a disgrace.”
The Spanish federation’s disciplinary committee is expected to publish its ruling before the Sevilla fixture on October 18.
